As you may remember, I developed a soft spot in my heart for her when we were on Wife Swap together, Palin writes. Please pray for her healing and for her family during this awful time. :(

1984—classic Joan Rivers doing stand-up on the Tonight Show.
This type of schtick made her famous.
I totally agree. Yet again, I will blame the demise of the film studios and the strangle-hold the moguls had on their stars which kept them in line. They had no say in plastic surgery because there wasn’t much available (rumor has it that Marilyn had work done on her chin and nose) but they controlled the hair styles and clothes they wore.
In watching interviews on TMC, I still see stars like Jane Powell and Tippy Hedren looking like real ladies - not the mutants you describe. Katherine Hepburn looked like a normal person to her death!
Fie on bad plastic surgery and the surgeons who commit it!
The 1986 clip was the death knell of her friendship with Carson - and almost the death of her career. She is wearing what she first wore when she appeared on Carson - without telling him that she was leaving his show (as permanent guest host) to host her own - opposite his. Carson, rightfully, never forgave her. Carson absolutely adored comics and comedy writers and was very generous with them. But if you crossed him, you were dead.
Rivers’ show was a disaster which led to the suicide of her husband. She then gave a horrifying press conference that I still haven't forgotten. It speaks well of her, I suppose, that she had the tenacity to pull through all of this and come out more famous than ever. Carson refused to talk to her till the day he died.
Thanks for that commentary,mm. Good stuff.
I did not know this was the last time they were together, for some reason I thought it to be later.
I remember the fallout from Joan’s show, and how Carson took it.
Joan’s a fighter, so she managed to carve a new role for herself regarding fashion commentary and stayed in the spotlight. Made a way for her daughter, also.
Now, that's funny, Sam.
It’s funny you should mention Jerry Falwell. I always used to think he was a jolly sort of fellow. I still remember in the ridiculous brouhaha over the Tellitubies (sic!) when he accused one of them of being gay, he was being castigated on the Today Show for such a point of view. He defended himself but in the middle of interview, he started to laugh helplessly, threw up his hands and admitted the whole thing was pretty silly.
You can swap wives?
“I was going to ask if Wife Swap had anything to do with wife swapping. I think Joe Piscapo did it as well.”
With the way the American media culture has been corrupted in the age of Obama, I would not be surprised to see a reality TV show where married couples swapped sexual partners. But, I don’t think the Wife Swap show went quite that far as the show did feature stars like Joe Piscapo.
I was listening to Joe’s radio show after it was aired. He was not too happy about it. I guess he needed the bucks.
She stole that joke from Rodney Dangerfield.
Funny how we gravitate toward people who speak the truth
Bristol Palin was on Wife Swap, not Governor Palin.
My wife is a few months younger than I am. We have been married close to 60 years. She has had no face or any kind of ‘lift’ surgery/changes. A few wrinkles that remind us we are growing older. She is still the Swedish beauty I married.
Congratulations to both of you!
My wife told me I should have added I was a WWII overseas vet so that you wouldn’t get the idea we were spring chickens.
Tell your wife I said Hey!
One of my mother’s friends, recently deceased unfortunately, in her retirement community, was a World War II veteran who had married a woman from Sweden. She predeceased him, but just last year when I was visiting, he was talking at supper about how tall and graceful and blonde she was.
“The headline is misleading.”
And of course it was unintentional. </s>
I agree with Sarah.
Prayers up for Joan.
