I'm wondering if anyone here is Muslim, or is greatly knowledgeable about the Muslim religion. My one question is...What is the story of the 72 virgins waiting for Muslim martyrs?
Were they humans that lived on earth and died or were they created just for the Muslim martyrs? Do they have any life outside being virgins waiting for martyrs? What awaits female Muslim martyrs in the afterlife? 72 male martyrs?
Once a virgin has slept with a martyr, do they go on to a productive afterlife, or do they cease to exist?
Also, why virgins? I guess no one wants to be with someone that's slept with every guy on the block, but certified virgins seems kind of weird too--especially if the intent is to treat them all like a piece of meat and then move on to the next virgin.
If you were a sultan or someone like Hugh Hefner, won't you be moving down going to 72 virgins?
Also, why 72? Isn't that a rather small number for eternity? I mean, one a year and the martyr is through in 72 years, then a thousand years later he'll be looking on enviously at the guy that went with one only every 200 hundred years.
Please answer these questions if you are Islam or know a lot about Islam.
I wonder if ripping out women’s genitals is to prevent Muslim men from being insulted at how bored and/or repulsed women are by their complete lack of sexual prowess?

Too much delving into any religious dogma appears to create some real logic problems.
The more sane religions choose carefully which self-conflicting elements they choose to ignore.
However, with Islam, it’s “turtles all the way down”.
Make sure, by religious design, that muslim men are deeply frustrated sexually in this life by hiding the women behind burqas and then have them sold off to wealthy old men...and then promise them unlimited sex in the afterlife if they die by killing Christians and Jews and other infidels.
Its a myth, all of it.

72 is a mystical number for them. I don’t know why, except possibly it is part of the base 12 counting system. Muslims tend to work to base 12 if they can, just like Chinese always work in odd numbers.
Virgins represent purity, which is blessed and to be protected. They do revere the idea of purity massively - as I said in another thread, Our Lady Madonna is the only woman mentioned in the Qu’ran and she is mentioned many times.
We got into an argument once about the nature of the virgins. Are they women? Are they Djinn? It was a lively debate, but we had no Imam to give the answer.
Oh I do. And besides, the three concepts are not mutually exclusive….

Thank you very much for that piece of history. My studies are in comparative religions and in my current duties, I spend a lot of time discussing the Muslim religion. I knew about the houris and the “white grapes” explanation. But I never thought about the different legends in terms of Syriac versus Arabic. Thank you very much.
