"They told me the big black lab's name was "Reggie" as I looked at him lying in his pen. The shelter was clean and the people really friendly. I'd only been in the area for six months, but everywhere I went in the small college town, people were welcoming and open. Everyone waves when you pass them on the street."

[Most of you don't know me here. I have severe arthritis with no use of right hand and limited with left. I type with left little finger and hit shift with right thumb. It's painful to say the least. So I rarely post answers and have never posted an article as it is very difficult. This text was embedded so could not cut-and-paste - had to type out first paragraph. This was so emotional, I made the effort. God bless. Dave]

Thank you so much for that post.
Even though I hate reading screens that suddenly become blurry because of ones like this one...

You are right. I teared up reading this story.

Snopes is a very lefty site. I don’t use them. Like all leftys, they lie. It’s probably not a true story but I still hate Snopes. Besides, why do you care if it’s true?

Thanks for the post, if I had to read something today that was certainly worthwhile.

Pointing out that Snopes is a lefty site has no bearing. If Snopes were to be incorrect, even somewhat consistently, then other websites would make a meal of it. They can't, because Snopes isn't.
The reason I care is that fiction should be identified as such, before people start going around and believing everything that they find in their inboxes.

Jeepers. None to you, obviously. And none to me.
On a more abstract level, take a random person and convince him or her that a story is true when it is not. Harm caused, or not?

Well, you do have somewhat of a couple of points. I mistrust Snopes as well, for general reasons, but then again Wikipedia is often used as a source and they are not the greatest resource in the world.
Plus, I happen to have fond memories of several Hans Christian Anderson tales, but then again they were never meant to be taken as Gospel, so this story went quickly from a Good Remembrance to a Nice Thought once the possibility of a mere imagining came up.
I will leave it to others to peruse the search engines and determine its validity...

It was a good story that caused no harm. It asked no one for money nor did it give false political facts. You just enjoyed crying "foul".
Have a nice day.

Great story...I’m an animal guy...mostly dog...My dog is my best friend, no question....When I say the more people I meet the more I love my dog...I’m not joking.
People could learn a lot about loyalty and friendship from dogs..Too bad most are too screwed up and will never know. Maybe a good thing for the dogs...
BTW, regarding your issue ya have there...Try voice recognition software for posting. It’s simple and cheap software and types nearly as fast you can speak...You’ll seldom use a key board again. A good program is called Dragon Naturally Speaking...Like 25 bucks or so and comes with a little mic you speak into. It’s now about 98 percent accurate too.
Take care.

Even if Snopes is correct and this story is indeed fictional, take it as a beautiful, poignant short story that in some form or another has indeed played itself out in real life.
