Late 1960s: Economy Class Seating on a Pan-Am 747
The 1960's were barely done when Pan Am again set a standard the rest of the world was forced to follow. Pan American's Boeing B-747 Jumbo Jets brought down the cost of long distance air travel once again.

Why give people these days room when they fly — they all dress like slobs.
It’s astonishing how bad it is nowadays. Last time I took a flight, my fellow passengers mostly looked like they’d all crawled out from under some rocks. Sloppy, smelly, unkempt. Coupled with the insanity of all the long lines, metal detectors, taking my shoes off, etc., I vowed never to fly again.
It was just too unpleasant an experience. It reminded me of some kind of old, third-world bus-trip. I was surprised there wasn’t some old peddler with a live chicken next to me. Come to think of it, that might have constituted an improvement over what I saw.
I really miss when America used to be so much more civilized, and people used to comport themselves with pride and dignity.
Me too.
I still ‘dress’ to travel. Hate the slovenly look so many seem to prefer today.
It was sure nice to have some seating room on those planes, with real food, real dishes and glasses and flatware.
This is supposed to be British Airways in the 60s:
Another one that looks plausible, at least:
Indeed, those were the days. I recall when United or American or whoever was flying 747s from LA to New York and Washington D.C.
Who remembers the BABY GRAND PIANO at the back of the plane? I do. Believe it or Not.
-That would be preferable to the last time I flew commercial a couple weeks ago.
Don’t think so. I flew with coffins from Nam.
Flying is so miserable these days.
Recently I flew to Florida with my son and we were able to bump up to 1st class - I told my son THIS is what coach used to be like...
That's because they all smoked.
I hadn’t thought of that but you may be right.....of course it might also be that most food was cooked at home so it wasn’t pre-fried, then fried again with tons of sugar added to everything
About 8 years ago, I flew from Dulles to Frankfurt on a Lufthansa 747. I can tell you for certain, it doesn’t look like that anymore. There was an upside to the close quarters, however. Must have had the gorgeous flight attendant brush my shoulder with her hip a couple dozen times during the flight. Didn’t mind at all.
I still fly on those occasionally. Flying on totally full ones out of Baghdad in the summer gave me a good baseline to compare other flights to. Sitting on the tarmac at 125 degrees waiting for take off made me appreciate the commercial planes.
Last time I flew to the West Coast I dropped a ring. Absolutely no way you could look for it we were jammed in so tight, even when we got there! I told the airline people and I got the ring on the way back. If I had dropped it on the way to New York, forget it probably.
“And no one in that 60s photo is obese”
In 2005 I attended my 50th high school reunion and the over 250 that attended not one was obese.
The Pan Am stewardesses of the 60s and 70s were GORGEOUS..STUNNING... and those little bowler hats with the uniforms..gawd..those were the days..
That was the grand time when one could board a plane without being groped first.
Scariest flight i’ve been on was a C130 net seat coming into Nellis AFB. Their approach was like, get over the runway and drop.
