Proofreading is a dying art

Posted on 08/21/2014 1:16:03 PM PDT by NKP_Vet

Proofreading is a dying art, wouldn't you say? Man Kills Self Before Shooting Wife and Daughter This one I caught in the SGV Tribune the other day and called the Editorial Room and asked who wrote this. It took two or three readings before the editor realized that what he was reading was impossible!!! They put in a correction the next day. I just couldn't help but send this along. Too funny... Something Went Wrong in Jet Crash, Expert Says No crap, really? Ya think? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Police Begin Campaign to Run Down Jaywalkers Now that's taking things a bit far! _____________________________

Panda Mating Fails; Veterinarian Takes Over What a guy! --------------------------------------------------------------- Miners Refuse to Work after Death No-good-for-nothing' lazy so-and-so's! ------------------------------------------------------ Juvenile Court to Try Shooting Defendant See if that works any better than a fair trial! ---------------------------------------------------------- War Dims Hope for Peace I can see where it might have that effect! ---------------------------------------------------------------- If Strike Isn't Settled Quickly, It May Last Awhile Ya think?! ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Cold Wave Linked to Temperatures Who would have thought! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Enfield ( London ) Couple Slain; Police Suspect Homicide They may be on to something! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Red Tape Holds Up New Bridges You mean there's something stronger than duct tape? ---------------------------------------------------------- Man Struck By Lightning: Faces Battery Charge He probably IS the battery charge! ---------------------------------------------- New Study of Obesity Looks for Larger Test Group Weren't they fat enough?! ----------------------------------------------- Astronaut Takes Blame for Gas in Spacecraft That's what he gets for eating those beans! ---------------- --------------------------------- Kids Make Nutritious Snacks Do they taste like chicken? ****************************** Local High School Dropouts Cut in Half Chainsaw Massacre all over again! *************************************************** Hospitals are Sued by 7 Foot Doctors Boy, are they tall! ******************************************* And the winner is.... Typhoon Rips Through Cemetery; Hundreds Dead Did I read that right? ***************************************************

Now that you've smiled at least once, it's your turn to spread the stupidity and send this to someone you want to bring a smile to (maybe even a chuckle). We all need a good laugh, at least once a day!

My pet peeves are autocomplete and autocorrect. I occasionally (frequently) get in a rush and write fast, so I am perfectly capable of generating my own errors, but I think the computer makes more than I do. Autocorrect, especially, tends to recreate the same mistake even after I’ve gone back and fixed it. Does anyone know how to turn it off?

I don’t think it’s dying. I think the dinosaur media has cut editor jobs in an effort to save money and depend on the line jourinalists to do their own editing.

Some if the stuff being published is just awful.

Of course the general dumbing down of America makes this problem even worse.

That post could have used some proofreading.

Proofreading is indeed dead, along with the journalistic arts formerly known as editing, spelling and having at least a smidgen of knowledge upon the subject one is writing about.

I'd say journalism, in general, is dead.

Most of the writers are illiterate, too. For jobs, it’s increasingly “who you know” or who you are related to.

There was a headline posted on here today (man I don't wanna go fetch link on my phone)... the L.A. Times headline was:

Seattle man says he killed 4 in Wash., N.J. to gain revenge against U.S.

I immediately freaked out because my parents live about 15 minutes from Washington, New Jersey.

Something Went Wrong in Jet Crash, Expert Says By George, he's right! That hadn't occurred to me. I guess that's why he's the expert.

reminds me of the youtube about the the ship that lost it's bow.

journalist "what happen?"

scientist "The bow fell off."

journalist "Is that unusual?"

The one that I recall first was in a magazine called Vending, or some such, they left the 'L' out of 'public' in a caption and I found it sniggerworthy. Hey, it was 1966.

1966?

Must have still been using typewriters.

I worked for a nearby County for a public agency, which will remain nameless.

That particular typo popped up at least once a month.

And that was late 90s-early 2000s

The word processing age, no excuse. Seems to me you can exclude specific words from the word processing dictionary to avoid such embarrassment.

We had a funny error in the yellow pages many years ago.(New England Telephone)

It was a large ad for a sex therapist.

The spacing was off in the word “therapist” and it was printed as;

THE RAPIST AVAILABLE 24 HOURS A DAY.

Friend of mine does it for a living. FR makes her crazy!

Typos never bothered me; easy enough which adjacent letter belongs. However, what is really irritating, are random homonyms.

My favorite?
