the Carol Channing evidence seems sketchy, just based on family history, which is not always reliable, in my experience working on various genealogies for people.

Apparently, from what I read, her mother decided to tell her she was black or part black, whatever, when she was about to leave home for college.

Ms. Carol was always kind of ditsy. Maybe her mom used to tease her that her father was the milkman and he was black.
