Very heavy drinkers seldom completely sober up. Elevated blood alcohol levels 24/7 whether they’re literally consuming alcohol at the moment or not. Forestalling the inevitable hangover for a very long time makes it much, much worse, to the point of hallucinations, body tremors, night sweats. Very unpleasant. Reinforces the destructive behavior, fear of those consequences.

Truly. Classmate of mine got up to .27 one time in high school on Everclear. He was nearly in a coma when they found him and almost died.
