A Pennsylvania woman's fight to get her dog back from a central Ohio rescue group has turned into a full-fledged legal battle and Internet war.
Veronica Covatch, 53, of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, has been trying to get her 5-year-old sheltie back since April, when she said the dog escaped from her friend's back yard in Columbus, Ohio.
Covatch said her dog, Piper, was picked up by Franklin County Animal Control and then turned over to Central Ohio Sheltie Rescue in Columbus in April, even though Covatch said a microchip in her dog would have shown she was the owner.

I agree. Definitely a scam.
Yes, you are right. If she bought the dog from a breeder and the dog was registered with the AKC, the papers will show the breeder’s name and litter registration number if the parents are registered also. They will show this person as the owner of the dog. The registration will also show the co owner’s name.
The SPCA is guilty of letting some of their employees run scams with outside friends to allow these friends inside to take animals out for profit.
This story gets stranger every day. More about the fraudulent (maybe even sociopathic) behavior of Penny Sanderbeck.

Virginia Covatch is also finally able to speak out to set the record straight about ownership of Piper and her efforts to get her dog back.

Thank you for this info, Desert Dreamer. I am a supporter of some rescue groups and some breeders. While both do great things; there is a dark underbelly to both just as there is to many other things. Crookedness doesn’t always belong to breeders although it does happen more than you think. There are dogs that have been promoted with good hips, etc. when, in fact, their hips have been substituted with other dogs hips. Yes, I have seen this happen. I have also seen seman stolen from breeders. I have seen some pretty disgusting breeders who are concerned more about money and power than their dogs. However, I have seen excellent breeders who are the most committed people in the world. There isn’t a good breeder in the world that hasn’t had to fight the bad ones and learned the hard way.
As far as rescues are concerned, yes there are good ones and there are some really bad ones. The bad ones usual goal is money. If they are able to get hold of a pure bred animal; they are going to sell it pronto. I am not even going to go into the details of what happens to any animal that gets into their hands.
The breeder in the case of Piper sounds legit. She seems to have the proof the dog belongs to her. This Penny gal appears to be the worst of the worst. She stole the dog. I imagine she probably sold it. That would be my guess. The dogs interest is not their main concern; however, profit is. Of course, my second guess is she is breeding the dog; but I think she probably sold it.
truth lies here especially the last ten paragraphs. COVATCH is in the right here

I truly cannot imagine how this woman feels.
Thanks for the article.
I hope she gets her dog back.
I wonder what Punxsutawney Phil has to say about this?
These “rescue” people are nuts!
We had a woman in this area who dognapped a valuable hunting dog out of someone’s yard, had it neutered, and sold it out of state. I think she slithered out of that charge somehow. Her excuse was that the dog was out in the snow. (It had a dog house). There is no evidence that the dog was neglected, or abused, in any way. Creeps!
Dittos! They cannot go kidnapping other peoples dogs...but they are crazy.
Sorry, meant to say owner of Piper instead of breeder.
nuconvert - i am a liberal who joined to be able to answer you. i am the author of the articles on this story - and i welcome areas where those of us who hold differing political views can come together over a situation that is just wrong.
this is about a little dog who needs all our help - conservatives, liberals and nonpartisans all.
i am proud to have many conservatives as friends - while we may disagree over political solutions, we never disagree over what is just plain wrong and an injustice that needs to be righted.
thank you for caring about piper - and thank you to ALL members of free republic who have expressed support for Piper and her owner, veronica covatch.
Welcome to FR.
I hope you will keep us updated on Veronica’s attempt to reclaim *her* dog.
What is being done to her *and* the dog is egregious beyond all reckoning.
Best of luck to all who are fighting to get Piper back *home*.
This is not partisan politics.
This is just right and wrong - as clear a case as I’ve ever seen.
This phony “rescue” seems to have been taken over by psychos.
Best of luck. Our prayers go with you and Ms Covatch and her pup.
