Here's a guy who pops a balloon from 1000 yards with a 9mm. Fact or fiction?

about 2.5 sec delay from shot to target

d = 1/2 at^2
a = 32 f/sec^2

hm... about 80 foot drop by my guesstimating

80/1000 = .125
about 7 deg up angle
sin(7deg) = .12

1/2*a*t^2 -= 1/2*9.8*t^2
So at 1 second, 4.8m
at 2 seconds, 19.6 m
At 3 seconds, 44.1m

So at 1000 fps, a horizontal shot will drop 44.1 m or 144.685 ft

Naive question: how does a revolver use 9mm? Moon clips?

Distance/time to target gives you the average velocity for the entire shot.

Muzzle velocity could have to be slightly higher to allow for deceleration.

Rate is 9.8 m/s2

So first second is 9.8 meters drop. About 10 yards

It does not follow. AVERAGE rate is 4.9 m/sec, since it starts at 0 and increases to 9.8 m/sec at the end of 1 sec.

Hence drop is 4.9 meters, or 1/2 a t2 as justified by this heuristic.

Only Jerry could do it.

I met a guy who popped balloons at 300 yards with a .38 snubbie, so it might be vaguely possible.
Might you this is a guy who shoots cases of ammo per day...

He is using 9x29, not 9mm Parabellum (9x19). This is a Winchester Magnum round. Big game round?

So yeah. It is possible.

Your plot is wrong. He mentions 147gr, not 124gr.

>> “Bullet begins to drop as soon as it leaves the muzzle.” <<

.
Not if it is aimed upward on a ballistic trajectory.

What do you think the “elevation” settings on a sight or scope are for?

A projectile aimed upward continues upward for a considerable distance. Brush up on your trigonometry, and ballistics.

My wife is the best shot I know. Raised on a ranch and can really shoot. But I’ve not seen her shoot a hand gun from that distance. Her dad bought her a 38 with a pocket hammer when she moved to “the city”... oklahoma city. I didn’t know when we were dating that she had the drop on me all the time :) But yeah... at the range she out shoots everyone, and I’m constantly warned not to make her mad at me.

Well, that was easy.....lol

Must had calculated the ballistics and set the sight for it.

Once he had it down pat, he filmed it.

But it’s a heck of a trick shot.

Interesting in that he didn't hit the balloon. When the bullet splattered a piece likely caught the balloon. I'm sure it took a while to figure the elevation, but all he had to do was watch where the shots were falling and adjust.

Bullets all fall at the same speed but the faster they go the farther they go before hitting the ground. If you dropped a bullet from your hand at the same time you fired the gun (if the gun was level) they would both hit the ground at the same time. The bullet starts falling the instant it leaves the gun, it is just a race to see how far it can go before falling all the way down.

My personal protection rounds of 9mm only have 125gr and that is a little more than my practice rounds at about 115. I would hate to be standing behind someone if they are shot with a 147gr load, it would likely go right through them, but then you wouldn't have to shoot twice. The report would scare anybody away.
