Franklin Graham Surprisingly Silent on Ebola infected Surgeon from Samaritan's Purse.
Aug. 3 2014 | lee martell

Posted on 08/03/2014 2:27:53 PM PDT by lee martell

Franklin Graham, the eldest son of evangalist Billy Graham, serves as President and CEO of Samaritan's Purse. Under his leadership, Samaritan's Purse has met the needs of poor, sick and suffering people in over 100 countries. Franklin's first book was written with Jeannette Lockerbie in 1983. The book's title is This One Thing I Do, and is the biography of Bob Pierce, who was the founder of both World Vision and Samaritan's Purse. Last week, the world was introduced to Dr. Kent Brantly, an American doctor who has been recently infectly with the deadly Ebola virus. A missionary from Charlotte N.C., a Nancy Whitebol has also been diagnosed, is still alive at this time, and will be transported to the states next week. Nancy is said to already be incapacited, or in critical condition. This is possibly the worst outbreak so far, and over 700 people have died from it since last December. When you compare the kill ratio to influenza, 700 seems like a very small number. The main difference is that as of now, there is still no actual treatment for any of the five subtypes of Ebola Virus except isolation, hydration, with palliative measures for the headaches and joint pain. Many American's thought it foolish to bring Dr. Brantly into this country, as they are concerned about the virus spreading into the general population.

A huge amount has been written about this latest outbreak of Ebola, and much more will be written before the present wave appears to peak, stablize, then reduce in frequency or potency. Has Reverend Franklin publicly said anything about Dr. Brantly, now fighting for his life in quarantine? I would expect the organization to consider withdrawing all of their representatives and returning them to the states for now, for their own safety. Samaritian's Purse has been of great service to many nations for quite some time. It's my (unrequested) opinion, that for now, taking some element of caution would be prudent. That is my take on it. There are some organizations that refuse to 'back down' from any danger, be it war, wild animals or biologic threats as this one. There are people who remain so thoroughly committed to their mission, that they will knowingly sacrifice their lives for the cause. What do you think? Should Rev. Franklin Graham make any public statements about the two doctors who have now become patients? Or do you think, his statements of 'concern and distress' would actually add little to the conversation but more controversy? Perhaps his silence is due to HIPAA laws that involve not sharing confidential patient information with unauthorized parties. Could be Graham's legal team has told him to stay quiet.

What do you think he should say? Have you communicated it to him?

Actually could care less what Franklin Graham has to say, but am a bit curious why Obama, despite his phone and pen, is still allowing commercial flights in and out of endemic areas of west Africa. If there is a limited endemic outbreak anywhere in the US, it is highly unlikely it will become epidemic, but it will cause panic and be devastating to the economy.

I almost went to work for Samaritans Purse but I couldn’t afford to live in Boone. I also went to college with Franklin and knew Dr Furman’s kids. I played racquetball with them..... in their house. They had a court.

You are just looking for any reason to criticize.

No, I have’nt communicated to him. Someone that well known is not likely to respond to me, just a nosy blogger on the net. If I had a brother or cousin thinking about offering their skills to Samaritan’s Purse, or a similar organization, I would want to know what they are doing to educate their workers about this disease. The basic Universal Precautions of wearing gloves and washing hands will not be enough in some cases, due to the ease this virus can be spread. If/when more of his workers contracts the virus, what will the policy of evacuation be? Will they all be returning to the U.S.? Will they be quarantined alone or bundled with other Ebola patients the way early AIDs sufferers were jammed into wards in the first part of the epidemic?

Are these people presumed to be self insured, or does Samaritan’s Purse accept the expense and if so for how long? There will probably be a cap to expenses covered. Even a charity has to establish some limits to it’s benelovance.
Would a recovered Ebola volunteer ever be permitted to return and under what conditions? Many of my questions would not be discussed on the news anyway. Corporate policy statements as these would come from Human Resources I would imagine.

You don't know the answer to that question, but you wrote the headline anyway?

Samaritan’s Purse
P.O. Box 3000
Boone, NC 28607
Phone (828) 262-1980
Fax (828) 266-1056

Write to or phone and ask for Franklin Graham.

For pete’s sake; he’s just one of Billy’s sons. What’s the big deal with contacting him? And why does he have to respond to get your message? Tell him what you think he should do.

Apparently you pulled the “information” out of your poop chute. I saw a lengthy interview with F.G. on Fox News a couple days ago. What’s your problem?

Hadn't connected the dots about that until just now. Hmmmm. Is odd.

The doctor that was transported to Emery will be a ‘human trial’ subject. He could receive one of several different experimental treatments that are used in ape trials. Here’s a bit from the linked article that explains a little:

“Last week we learned that two Americans working in Liberia for a medical charity, Samaritan’s Purse, were among those who had contracted Ebola. When their symptoms took a turn for the worse, the organization announced that the two were going to get experimental treatments. One was going to get a blood transfusion from a 14-year-old boy who recovered from the disease, the organization said; the other was to get an “experimental serum.”
