Appearances matter. All of our lives we were told that by our mothers, school teachers, employers and etiquette books.
If it matters at all to others I would like to hear about it.
It matters to me. Call it stupid but I do judge/make fun of/ignore/hire people based on their appearance.
Civilization collapsed.
Was recently at my physician’s office. An obese young woman came in wearing short shorts, a halter top and the obligatory flip flops. Surely she knew it was not a good look for her, but she didn’t care. That is the reason for the trashy appearance of those who cause us to avert our eyes in public places.
Civilization collapsed.
However, appearances most definitely matter. And those that think they don’t and apply that belief to their life find out the hard way that it DOES matter.
All of life is sales and marketing, and appearances are very much a part of that formula. And that belief has served me very well for my 60 years.
Agree it started in the 60’s people dress like slobs and winos.
Maybe prospective employers should show up at the houses of those applying for jobs.
When did we go from the toga to the three piece suit?
as soon as they were invented?
When the center of civilization was no longer in the Med climate zone.
You see the old movies and TV shows, people wore suits and proper clothes to do anything it seems
Appearances matter to me. I don’t even go to the gym without doing hair and makeup. I’m trim, tidy, have excellent posture and move well. All of which are worth the time and effort.
Do I judge others by their appearance? To some extent, but it’s not necessarily the most important thing. A dear friend, world’s greatest mom, has horrible posture and I see how that costs her. People don’t really know what they’re looking at, but if you slump around, they treat you with little respect.
It's how they recognize one another.
I’ll never forget the woman in her 30s who came to mass wearing a mini skirt up to her hiney and carrying a cup of Starbucks coffee.
Even to the dinner table. Look at old photos taken in the 20’s and 30’s. Everyone was wearing dresses, suits and ties...
I rant to my wife unit all the time that one day the next bra strap I see, person wearing pajamas at the store, fat ass wearing body glove work out pants, or underwear sticking out will send me over the edge.
I am so tired of cargo shorts I could just ... well...
I know a guy who owns rental property who insists on a visit to the applicant's current home before renting to them.
The older I get, the less it matters. Lipstick on a pig and all that. And the younger I was, the less I could afford it...*sigh*... Throws up hands...
But here are two websites I always liked: http://www.acontinuouslean.com/ & http://www.styleforum.net/ ...
The first for just a lot of well-made, understated stuff, and the second for when I had specific questions about style.
I fear for the human race
