An 80-year-old California retiree shot dead a pregnant woman as she and a male accomplice tried to flee Tuesday night after breaking in and robbing the man’s home in Long Beach.
And Tom Greer has no regrets about plugging the woman with two shots as she begged for her life.
“She says, 'Don't shoot me, I'm pregnant! I'm going to have a baby!' And I shot her anyway," Greer told KNBC-TV.
The elderly man, wearing his arm in a sling Wednesday as he spoke to a reporter, said he came back to his house in the ritzy Bixby Knolls neighborhood Tuesday evening and found the woman and a man ransacking his home.
"When I went in there, they tackled me," Greer told the news station. "Both of them jumped up on top of me."

I’m sure that Long Beach police would very much have preferred the man STFU too.
Yep, her family will sue and he will be out on the street at 80 years old which will basically be a death sentence for him. Too many examples of people screwing themselves after they defend themselves. Probably the worst example being Bernard Goetz in New York city who turned himself in and opened his mouth when it was very unlikely he would have been caught. He ended up owing $43 MILLION to one of his muggers.
While I am not defending the woman who was shot, I do think this one goes beyond self defense (assuming, of course, that the actual facts are as presented). If you pull a gun, and the assailant flees, you are NOT justified in shooting at that point. If he had shot while being tackled by the assailants, that’s a different story. If the assailant is fleeing, there’s no longer a threat to his life or well-being, so shooting seems to be an act of retribution, not one of self defense.

"I come back and they see me with a gun, and they run," he told the NBC affiliate.
The man took off but the woman stumbled in an alley behind the home. She pleaded for her life as Greer took aim and fired.
I'm not defending these thugs, but as others have said, this guy needs to shut up and find a good lawyer. Along with his statements, the fact that he shot her outside in the alley after they fled the house is not going to help his case.

Yes, basically he screwed himself big time by opening his mouth. This reminds me of that case last year of the guy who shot the two teen who broke into his house. He opened his mouth, said he was setting a trap, shot them before they made any threat blah blah, he even tape recorded it while he shot them. Now he’s doing life in prison, freakin idiot.

as much as I'm for air conditioning bad guys in the act, I would have a difficult time ventilating a visibly pregnant woman, who is pleading for her life......not to even mention she had her back to him

A bit late for that. Since he he shot them while fleeing then whatever Castle Law-like protections are available in California most likely just went out the window. If they were fleeing then any threat to his life was past. Expect some level of murder charge within a days.
Unbelievably bad advice. Besides being immoral, any decent crime scene investigator will be able to see what you did. Then you're in a world of difficulty, even more than before.
You can shoot to protect your property under certain circumstances here in Texas, especially at night.I don’t believe many other states have these provisions, though, and I’d be surprised if California does.
Should have shot her in the house. No problem whatsoever with that. Chasing her down and shooting her in the back is murder. I’d charge him in a heartbeat.
