Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Joel Peralta is suffering from symptoms that resemble those of the Chikungunya virus and expects the team to put him on the disabled list.
Peralta went home to the Dominican Republic during the All-Star break and explained that he began feeling sick on Friday.
Ive had a fever and pain in my joints, Peralta said by telephone on Monday to MLB.com. Feels like all my joints are sore. Thats how I feel.
The Chikungunya virus has become more common in Caribbean countries and is spread through mosquitoes. The veteran reliever shared that he remembers coming into contact with some while he was in the Dominican Republic.
I think so, Peralta told MLB.com. I kind of remember getting bit by a mosquito. One or two times.
He explained that the only treatment has been Advil and Tylenol for his fever.
Its supposed to last a week, then it just goes away, he told MLB.com. I do feel better today. Able to walk better.
Peralta, who is 2-3 with a 4.15 ERA in 43 appearances this season, made his last appearance on July 12 against Toronto.
He is unsure if he will be placed on the disabled list, but if he is, it will be the first time in his career.
I dont know yet, but its most likely because I need a couple of days to get back, he said to MLB.com.
Peralta’s already on the 15-day DL. He “thinks” he has chikungunya, which is not the same as actually having it...
Was that what Bill Murray was talking about in Caddyshack?
Chikungunya (CHIKV) is a viral disease that causes high fever and joint pain. Dubbed as the cousin of dengue, CHIKV is also transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, the same breed that brings dengue.....means To be contorted due to the joint pains that the victim feels when he got the disease.
The first documented case of Chikungunya in the Philippines was during the 1960s. The disease has been identified in countries in Asia, Africa...... and the Americas.
The common symptoms of Chikungunya are high fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, rash and nausea which are similar to dengue. But unlike dengue, Chikungunya does not often result in death but the joint pain may last for weeks, months, and even years......there is no vaccine or treatment available to cure the disease, only treatments to relieve the symptoms.
When we went on our Caribbean cruise this spring, we made sure to load up on repellent spray and wrist bands. Nobody else seemed to be aware of it at all.
I hope it isn’t as hard to cure as it is to pronounce.
Surely if you are a wealthy baseball player, you should go to the doctor and get diagnosed, right?
maybe he just wanted an extra week off
I feel like I am doomed to get one of these awful diseases.
Mosquitoes LOVE ME.
I grew up in NYC and I got mosquito bites there in February and November.
I AM DOOMED.
Does eating garlic help? It makes ticks less likely to bite you.
Speaking of dengue, according to wikipedia “Humans are the primary host of the virus,”
That means that the tidal of wave of illegals coming from latitudes where dengue is rampant could also speed up the spread into the US.
If there were any justice the open border b8stards MCLame and Flake would pick this up on the few times they return to AZ
I should just probably spray myself in DEET from head to toe when I’m going to be outside.
Well, his team just left Minnesota where our state bird is the mosquito.
