When congress was taking heat for slithering out of the burden of participating in Obamacare, I recall one of them complaining that the extra expense would drive the best and brightest of America away from government (self)service.

Victor Davis Hanson taught the classics, I think, at Cal State Fresno for many. many years and I remember reading that he said the #1 hoped for job among his students for at least the last 15 years was a job in government.
