That is a darn good question. I wonder this myself.
Corrie Ten Boom in her book “The Hiding Place” quotes her Sister Betsy as saying “Oh want a wounded person”. Her sister was talking about a German female prison guard that was beating another prisoner.
I think knowing is half the battle as in all things.
