To participate in the recall, Remington Arms Co. recommends the following:
Step 1: Visit xmprecall.remington.com or call 1-800-243-9700 (Prompt #3 then Prompt #1) Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. EDT. You will be asked to provide your name, address, telephone number, and rifle(s) serial number.
Step 2: Upon receipt of the information requested in Step 1, Remington will send you pre-paid shipping tags, boxes and written instructions. Remington will cover all related shipping, inspection and cleaning charges. Please ONLY return your rifle with the designated shipping tags and boxes, as they are marked to expedite the rifle to a dedicated Remington facility.
Upon return of your rifle, you will note a punch mark on the bolt release. This mark confirms your rifle has been inspected and specialty cleaned under this recall program.
One of the hardest things to do is to get a company to admit there is a problem when fixing will cost them millions.
They will get in millions of rifles only to let gov raid them, or ballistics done on barrels to future frame people. Sounds conspiratorial I know, but I don’t trust the regime.
Wonder if this applies to the 770.
Thing is wicked accurate but, I can’t stand the bolt.
It chatters each time I chamber and I’ve been told for $300 I can get a fancy Bolt that will fix the problem.
What makes me angry is that this has been a “known” problem for decades.
My uncle, a National Match shooter, told me about it in the early 1990’s when I first had an inkling on getting in to target shooting. The man who designed the trigger made recommendations on fixing the issue well before that, but it would have increased the costs so his suggestions were not implemented till the law suits started.
I love my 870, great shot gun, but this is one of the reasons I no longer shoot Remington rifles.
There are specific dates of manufacture that are targeted for this call back. It seems to be the newer models. There is a link at the Remington site for this call back. I have a Model 700 .308 that I won last year in a hunting club raffle. It fell into the category for a recall. Remington sent me a box with UPS return postage paid. I have elected to have a reputable gunsmith evaluate the situation. Also , I have an expensive scope mounted that would have to be disassembled for shipping. If you own one of these rifles, you need to have it evaluated. Gun accidents are permanent. Remington will replace the mechanism free of charge, but, you will need to ship it to them
Just drop in a Timney. It takes about ten minutes and a five year old’s mechanical aptitude and you’re good to go. Don’t let Remington’s lawyers engineer your rifle.
What other .308 rifles are there that are just as good or better and about the same price?
I replaced my Remington trigger with a Timney. I’m not mechanically inclined but the installation was easy.
Also replaced the stock with a Manners mini-chassis.
