The ceremony included a bit of comedy, but there was no denying the significance: For the first time in its history, the Navy promoted a woman on Tuesday to become a four-star admiral.
Surrounded by friends, family and peers, Adm. Michelle J. Howard was promoted to her new rank at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. Shell take over as the vice chief of naval operations, the No. 2 officer in the service. She is not only the first woman to hold the job, but the first African-American.

But was she promoted through military affirmative action?
I’m sure she’ll be just as successful as Bull Halsey, Chester Nimitz and David Farragut.
Duty Honor Country
If she can cook too
Hey..
Oh, I deny it, alright.
First of all, there are way, way, WAY too many four-stars for the size of our armed forces - men and women, both.
But to give an officer whose surface warfare commands were, to put it mildly, minor such a distinction is ludicrous.
The Vice CNO from 1942 (when the billet was created) to 1945 was a three-star, and if three stars was good enough for a 2500-ship navy and 6 Marine divisions, it is CERTAINLY good enough for now.
Let’s see:
Ugly. Check
Black. Check
Women(sort of), Check
Probable SHAM “Marriage”. Check
Yep this B!TCH is “Qualified”!
Nimitz, Radford, Halsey, King “Granpa” MacCain WOULD PUKE ON “HER”!
This new type of leadership and 22% of West Point freshmen being girls, is probably why we Americans and especially old vets, feel so secure and happy today as we look at the Cold War being reconstructed, and Islam and China on the march.
If she deserved it, hurrah to her!
If she got it because of her _preferences_ then NA.
It doesn't get any more Orwellian than that.
they never look like Laurie Dhue :(
No. :)
Grace Hopper made a bigger difference than most. Never got 4-stars.
I think she taught me first grade ...
Rank Date
US Navy O10 Admiral July 1, 2014
US Navy O9 Vice Admiral August 24, 2012
US Navy O8 Rear Admiral August 1, 2010
US Navy O7 Rear Admiral (lower half) September 1, 2007[5]
Interesting picture.
I realize that as a 3 Star she has plenty of subordinates to do the ‘heavy lifting’ BUT take away the newspaper and ‘awards’ and her ‘work area’ looks very similar to BO’s.
Maybe she is Qualified. Maybe she is Over-Qualified, but we see 2 things that make her ‘newish’ if she is the tri-fecta, we have reached a new low.
I have already told my daughter that she can depend on me to do absolutely NOTHING to encourage her sons to join the Military, I am not yet to the point of discouraging them but on a daily basis I am getting closer to realizing why some people during ‘my era’ (Vietnam) were sending their sons to Canada or at least discouraging them from joining, but with the Draft they had to take ‘other’ actions.
I am sure the Fathers and Grandfathers of the time had reasons (at least in their minds) to not want their kin to go to SE Asia but I definitely don’t want anyone ‘associated’ with me being stuck in a hell hole like we keep getting ourselves involved in.
I never thought I would feel this way.
Of course when my Grandfather retired after 50(or so) years of carrying mail, - He, being a ‘good Irish Catholic’ in upstate NY, of the D persuasion, REFUSED to accept his certificate signed by Ike - I couldn’t understand it.
Funny, I have the exact same thought when having to accept anything from WJC or BO......
Now, even though I had 2 Uncles, 5 Aunts and 3 older cousins, I was the first R in the family and probably one of the VERY FEW Irish Catholics that had no use for the Politician, JFK and I was the wisened age of 21 for his first election.
Er, that’s affirmative...
I hear you.
