As a point of clarity, what do you mean by along the trench.
Is that on top of the area where you put the wood, or is it around the perimeter of the area?
Thanks for the tip. I have gobs of unused wood from the trees we cut down to make room for more gardens.

If there are no water regulations stopping you from doing so, the following would probably be much easier to build and work better for you in MO and for other folks in the Midwest. You should see results within about a couple of years.

Here's the reason for my previous instructions being different. At least some of these states here in the West have water regulations that prevent terraces, dams and the like.
