Unless they’re professional work dogs, they should only IMO be kept by those who live in the country and have the resources and know-how to keep them from escaping and/or endangering others.

There are many more safer breeds for pet owners to enjoy.

Here is a longer version and I believe the original version from here...

http://www.catster.com/forums/Dog_Laws_and_Legislation/thread/607398/1

It started with a news account reporting the weight of the 'pitbulls' as 120 lbs.
That set off tingling in my BS meter
and I watched the internet as new accounts were published

--------------------------------------

"Now in addition to the report of 120 lbs an update has this info

"They don't come out the gate," Raymond Sanchez told News 4 WOAI.
"But, I mean, they're huge. They're just not average dogs, they're big pit bulls.
Do you know what I mean? They must weigh 150 pounds"

Caution advised on this one until more info is available.
Sounds like they could perhaps be Am.Bulldogs or some sort of Mastiffs."

-----------------------------------------

Then I posted an update (note at this point I thought dogsbite.org was a reputable site)
with the picture that had me wondering if there had been a misidentification.

------------------------------------

"An update here...

http://www.dogsbite.org/blog/2009/03/2009-fatality-boy-killed-by-pit-bulls.html

indicates both dogs were intact males

only photo I've been able to find...

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l172/kanawa/dogs/sanantionioMar09.jpg

difficult to make judgement from pic."

-------------------------------------------

Then I did something that needs to be done in order to get
factual information upon which to base an accurate analysis of a dog attack
I did some, hands on, personal investigating.

---------------------------------------

"I spoke with Lisa Norwood of San Antonio Animal Services. She was there at the scene of the attack and observed the dogs.

I raised the question of the reported weights of the dogs.
She said the reports were not accurate
and gave the weights of the dogs as between 75 and 85 lbs.

She said that one of the dogs was a type of pitbull mix
the other definitely was not...she judged it to be a Retriever mix.

She had this important piece of information...
both dogs were intact males.

Animal Services had never been called to this address nor had any reported problems with these dogs.

She did say there were anecdotal reports some of which fell into normal dog behavior...barking at the fence at passerbys
but they had no reports of bites and under Texas law bites must be reported
no matter how small and the dog must undergo quarantine.

The dogs were both licensed but didn’t have the recommended micro-chip
also, they did not have the required special license for an intact dog, cost of which is $50.

We discussed the function of the dogs
and agreed that while it appeared they served as guard dogs
the fact that they lived in the house indicated
they also functioned as family dogs.

She mention that one of the elements of the story that still is not clear
is how the dogs got outside which is where they were when the police arrived.

We chatted a bit longer and both agreed
that so many of these tragedies could be avoided
if people just did the sensible and responsible thing
and did not leave infants unattended with dogs.

She was very helpful in answering my questions and I’d like to thank her
and all the folks at San Antonio Animal Services for the fine work they do."

--------------------------------------

At that point I contacted dogsbite.org to inform them of this information.
I was naive and thought they were concerned with accurate compiling of information.
After a number of attempts to contact them with no response
and without their reporting of the incident being corrected,
I was forced to the conclusion that they were not what I had assumed them to be.

Desemination of accurate information was not and is not the focus of their agenda.

Yes, your KC Dog Blog link points out that the woman behind dogsbite.org once expessed the agenda of promoting breed-specific laws, that she probably has a personal agenda against pit bulls due to personal experience, and that most organizations are against them breed-specific laws.

However, KC Dog Blog - the very same website - makes at least as good an argument that specific breeds, particularly pit bulls with assistance from rottweilers, are the issue when it comes to fatalities by specific breed.

I click in the KC Dog Blog's left hand categories and look up dog bite fatalities for 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014.

This 'dogbite.org has an agenda so trust us instead' website cites approximately 163 fatalities by dog attack since 2009, roughly 85 of which were by pitbull, 4 by "media or authorities called pitbull but at this website we think the dog was mixed", 16 by unknown - and otherwise you're getting many, many by feral packs, 12 Rottweilers, 6 German Shepherds, 8 Bull Mastiffs, 7 Huskys, 8 bulldogs, a Presa Canario, 3 Cane Corsos, a Chow, several Boxers, a mastiff/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, one(?) retriever/lab mix, . . . any surprises there other than the retriever/lab other than the fact that no Dobermans appeared?

“Escaping”?

Really?

They’re not Velociraptors imprisoned on some remote tropical island, you know.

Until I moved here, [and a year after that, actually] mine had no fenced yard and none of the many I’ve had ever “endangered” anyone except my pedo uncle.

I’ve lived in rural areas, suburbs and city apartments with them.

Never had an issue.

Considering that I cannot even pause when walking without having one crash into me, the odds that they’d try to “escape” me are slim to none.

I have the opposite problem.
They stick like beggar ticks.

You have some rather odd perceptions of Dobermanns.

90+% of Dobermann “attacks” on record were done in the defense of their owners.

I see no problem there.

Don’t start nothin’, won’t be nothin’.

The bigger issue of DBO is their egregious use of multiple phony accounts linked to just a few people, spreading lies all over the interwebs.

Most of the fraudulent posters/supporters have “gone into hiding”.
[i.e..shut up and vanished due to legal issues]

Hardly a good example.

As I mentioned before, the self-same scum who own problem dogs piss themselves when in the presence of Dobes.

I see it all the time.

Have you ever watched a grown man snatch his Pit off the ground and run off ~carrying~ it, just because your Dobe poked his head out the car window at a stop light?

Had a whole pack of pit-brandishing, strip-mall terrorist yutes flee the sidewalk, into a parking lot because you and your Dobe came out of PetSmart?

I have.

It’s like they’ve seen Lucifer on a leash.

Crazy but true.

“Also understand that a sheepdog is a funny critter: He is always sniffing around out on the perimeter, checking the breeze, barking at things that go bump in the night, and yearning for a righteous battle.”

Ironic.

I have no issue with Dobermans. I’ve met protective ones, but I’ve never met an aggressive one.

Daisy had been a very lovable, and well loved, dog, until she suddenly snapped.

By your own admission she was not a naturally mean dog
but rather a naturally loving dog until something triggered an attack.

What’s ironic about those of us warriors who protect people, including from killer dogs?

Do you think that Lt. Colonel writing about the men who protect you was literally talking about dogs?

“a naturally loving dog until something triggered an attack.”

Yup! Doug’s talking on the phone “triggered an attack.” If only he hadn’t been on the phone, she never would have “snapped!” Right.

To: Dr. Bogus Pachysandra

You don’t know what triggered the attack.
I believe in a rational, cause and effect universe.
Something triggered it.
I wasn’t there, dont know your friend Doug or his dog or the dog’s upbring.
I am relying only on your perception and opinion of the circumstances.
So I really can’t make a informed judgement.
I doubt though that it was ‘Doug talking on the phone’.
I assume he had talked many times before on the phone in the presence of the dog.
You have stated the dog had always been loving,
so I think it valid to say it was a naturally loving dog.

Don’t believe that about grizzlies. I’ve spent a lot of time hunting out of fly in camps in grizzly country. A two year old grizzly will kill the biggest black bear in the country, if you are hunting black bears, and run across a griz, you head somewhere else to hunt, as they will kill them or run them off.

The locals are wary of grizzlies, but are as fearful of black bears as they are raccoons, that’s all I need to know. Get between a sow grizzly and her cubs, and your life insurance better be paid up.

Yes, you said that they said black bears are more likely to stick with the attack. I don’t think that would be an accurate statement, I know it wasn’t your statement, but there is no comparison between black and grizzly bears.
