Why design something you know nothing about how to make it work? In order to put a man on the moon, we had to invent the technology to invent the technology that made it possible to put a man on the moon.
That started with a single pronouncement by JFK that by the end of the 1960's, America would have a man on the moon.
First step to any technological breakthrough is to have a vision.
