Now many kids dont even want to drive. My sister thought her son would never drive. He wasnt interested.I know of many kids like this.
Back in the day, we were chomping at the bit to get our learners permit. Then got our licenses ASAP.
I remember the day I got my license. It was an overcast slightly rainy day. About one or two hours after I got my license, I drove myself to work. Man, I felt HUGE.
There was something about having a car. It wasn't just FREEDOM, there was also the sense of personal responsibility. Maybe that's the whole issue with todays society. No desire for personal responsibility. No desire for advancement. Who needs freedom, if there is someone to take care of all your wants and needs?

I was working a full time and walking a good 2 miles back and forth to work each way when I bought my first car. But I bought it before I got my drivers license (I had a learners permit) so I had to walk by it, parked in front of the house for a whole week before my dad could take me to the DMV to take my driving test and get my license. Boy that felt like the longest week of my life.
A week after I got my license, I drove from Maryland up to New Jersey to spend a week at my uncles beach house on LBI. ; )

Almost EXACTLY how I remember the day getting my license. To drive to work after school was one of the greatest feelings I had as a teenager.
Oh -- 65 Ford pickup step-side. Robin's egg blue. Four on the floor 4X4 . I should have never sold it (sniff)

In the mid 70s, me and my buddies were literally counting down the days until we could get our permits. I think that the opportunity to take girls out and park was a big impetus. Kids today seem indifferent, as they are with moving out and getting their own place.
