The procedure is minor. It’s the prep that is unpleasant.
I do recommend them for a 50th birthday present to yourself, and every 5 or so years after that, depending on risk factors.
A skin check every year over 55 is also a good idea, and a PSA for men starting at about that age. (May need to fight with the doctor to get that one).

I know the risk is very small but we lost a relative from a colonoscopy

Unlikely. None of us is George Soros.

I didn’t think it was too unpleasant. I chose the cherry flavor. And now I have a good jug in which to take my tea to work.
People leave my tea alone, since I left the label on the jug.

I have a colonoscopy tomorrow for the 5th time in life. Was told I could mix lemon juice but I am not keen on that. If it were just a glass or two maybe, but not so many.
A good trick is to use a large straw (or double straws) aimed at the back of the mouth.

Sorry about the loss of your relative, FRiend.
Needless to say there is the small risk of death in most anything we do.

And BTW, They found no polyps, but they did find several diverticula, so I have to be careful what I eat.

Come to think of it... my father-in-law went for a colonoscopy and collapsed shortly before at the place. They took him to the hospital thinking he had a heart-attack but turned out he was allergic to the medicine you have to drink. Which is serious because you have to drink a lot.
I told him I had four colonoscopys in four months and he told me that’s BS - the doctor would never allow that. But I had three doctors, including finally a real specialist surgeon.

It’s painless with anesthesia, which I think is used in nearly ally of the cases now. Buy it is not painless in preparation for the procedure. It seems worthwhile in most cases.

“lost a relative from a colonoscopy”
I won a free week in the hospital and 3 weeks of healing up after one. Got a hole poked in my intestine during removal of polyps. Next year I get the choice of getting one again. I will do the “virtual” one first to see if there is a problem.

I will do the virtual one first to see if there is a problem.
Those are not readily available yet in many locations. Also, many insurance companies have been refusing to pay for them because they cost in the $6k range (prices vary). It takes a while for new technology to become acceptable.
Since 1995, I have had 4 regular c's due to previous polyps and severe diverticulosis. The first 2 went okay, a couple of polyps. The last 2 took a week for the general discomfort and tiredness to subside. Last one had zero polyps, so I am hoping I won't need another for a long while.
