Chicago lawmakers’ decision to ban plastic bags in chain stores next year goes beyond the arguments over the city’s economic and environmental conditions. The measure that’s set to take effect a year from August touches on everyday decisions people make. People walking along Michigan Avenue on Wednesday said it will affect a range of habits, such as how they pick up after their dogs and line the trash cans in their bathrooms. Maiwand Mayar, 22, said that he uses them to transport his laundry and, like “anyone in every society,” his trash can. He couldn’t immediately think of how he would replace them.

Do you live in Chicago or NYC or any other large city? City people WALK to the store; they transport their groceries in shopping carts. OR they have them delivered. Driving to the supermarket is pretty unusual in an urban environment (which Chicago clearly is).
why don’t they just use corn starch bags?

Plastic bags were banned in Santa Fe, NM but only the plastic bags under a certain thickness. The thicker, nicer plastic bags handed out by clothing stores and other such places are fine.
How crazy is that? The city council even allowed commentary by a 4th grader as to how she was in favor of the ban. *sigh*

Forgot to say that paper bags with 40% recycled content is okay, but you will have to pay 10 cents for those unless you are on food stamps. If you are on food stamps they’ll also give you reusable bags.

I’m going to buy several cases of them before they are banned.
Take them to the maerket and make the baggers fill them and then reuse them as we do now when we get home.

My local chain discount store sells all sorts of plastic bags for all sorts of uses.
Can’t just be using those free ones, ya know - - -
Oh - when I dispose mine, I do cut the handles. I have actually seen a seagull in town with a plastic bag caught somewhere - the beak? I was just a tad too far away to see, as he flew across an intersection.
But it is hysterical when a cat gets caught in one. Took us 30 minutes to get him calmed down enough to get the bag off.
We use the plastic bags on the farm all the time. They are handy when you plant to early and need to cover your plants to protect from freeze/frost. Great for little kids shoes (that visit) to keep poop off the shoes. The list is endless.
I have NEVER paid for a bag. That's the idea. I don't have to buy a bag to carry my groceries into my house. I also get to use the bags for other purposes.

I’ll join you! I still have my Grandma Anita’s Market Basket that she and I would use to carry our purchases when we went to the Municipal Market (Farmer’s Market of olde) in Milwaukee, WI in the 60’s.
It had a secure cover and was great from bringing home the live chicken we’d later butcher. One can’t even buy a live chicken at the Butcher Shop, anymore...if one can even FIND a Butcher Shop! ;)

Don’t you get what they are doing? Think frogs and slowly warming water. It’s not about how people do their shopping. I’m sure some people could ride a unicycle to the store with a shopping basket balanced on their head. It’s about having another freedom yanked away for a bogus reason. The changes to the “environment” in Austin are microscopic.

Defense of freedom is bigger than just you and your own lifestyle. You should never feel that others must make the same decisions that you do-that’s unAmerican. You need to wise up because the next freedom the emboldened Austin Council swipes might be one you really will miss.
I understand that all too well. However, the argument advanced, “what are old people going to do” is more than a little lame. It was that which I was addressing.
Plastic bags only came into existence becaus paper bags were banned in the early 80’s. We had to ban them due to global cooling and to prevent the coming ice age!
Yet, if you question the current envirofascists, then you are the science denier. Never mind that they are wrong EVERY TIME and wrong with EVERY PREDICTION.
I’m old. We are not stupid and we grew up with paper bags.
I’ll just put the paper bags in a very large tote that I have. If I have more groceries I’ll carry an extra tote. There are also paper shopping bags available.
No problem.
