A North Charleston man was hit with a federal fine for refilling his drink without paying. The on-site construction worker says he didn't know refills at the VA Medical Center in downtown Charleston came at a price, and Wednesday, during his lunch hour, he was slapped with federal charges.
The ticket was issued by the Federal Police Force at the VA Medical Center in downtown Charleston after Christopher Lewis refilled his soda without paying the $0.89. A hospital spokesperson called it a "theft of government property."
"Every time I look at the ticket, it's unbelievable to me, says Lewis, who works construction. I can't fathom the fact that I made a $0.89 mistake that cost me $525."
Lewis is now out of a job.

>> “theft of government property.”
That’s a rich concept.
If he had just told them he was an illegal alien, they would have given him his refill for free and a to go cup for the road!
Is it posted?
We are ALL CRIMINALS now.
We are ALL CRIMINALS now.
” The on-site construction worker says he didn’t know refills at the VA Medical Center in downtown Charleston came at a price, and Wednesday, during his lunch hour, he was slapped with federal charges. “
ALL TYRANTS ALWAYS CLAIM THAT: “IGNORANCE OF THE LAW IS NO EXCUSE....”
OF COURSE THE FACT THAT THE “LAW” IF A GIANT MESS OF MILLIONS OF PAGES OF CODES AND REGULATIONS AND BILL HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT WHATSOEVER...
I AM SHOUTING BECAUSE I AM PISSED OFF BY THIS IDIOCY...
When you DDOS the Legal code you can become a tyrant and claim that Ignorance of the law is no excuse....
To a liberal, IT’S ALL GOVERNMENT PROPERTY....................
Was there a sign posted that stated refills are not free?....................
"I never had an option to make right what I had done wrong."
Question--why in tarnation isn't that dispenser behind a counter then?!
So many cops out there do not understand the second amendment or the carry laws in their own states, it is disgusting. You have to have the law written on paper to educate them. They all Re under orders and not under law.
Rule of law my arse indeed, only for us, not them.
In fact lying with a badge is perjury, but you never see that enforced... nope.
If it’s not clearly posted, I can envision that a lot of visitors would find themselves with a similar problem.
Perhaps that is the idea...
“Was there a sign posted that stated refills are not free?....................”
My assumption would be that if the drink machine was in easy reach of customers they’re free. At some McDonald’s there’s a sign on the self-service reading something like, “Do not bring a glass from a previous visit. Refills are only free when you first purchase the drink.”
Really. We don’t have the ability to prosecute rapes and serious crime, but we have time for this?
I read through the posting. It says he got aggressive. If he had been pleasant and low key there would have been no problem.
Well, the $525 fine made the government $499.11 in profit.................
The man said he didn’t see the sign. Could or would a private business charge that much? Only theft of “government property” would merit this fine.
"Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?"
