Word For The Day, Thursday, April 17, 2014 – recondite
dictionaries ad nauseam | 17 April 2014 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

recondite \REK-un-dyte\ adjective
1. hidden from sight; concealed
2. difficult or impossible for one of ordinary understanding or knowledge to comprehend : deep
3. of, relating to, or dealing with something little known or obscure

Example sentence:
"We hear from mathematicians that bees have practically solved a recondite problem, and have made their cells of the proper shape to hold the greatest possible amount of honey, with the least possible consumption of precious wax in their construction."
— From Charles Darwin's 1859 book On the Origin of Species

Etymology:
While "recondite" may be used to describe something difficult to understand, there is nothing recondite about the word's history. It dates to the early 1600s, when it was coined from the synonymous Latin word "reconditus." "Recondite" is one of those underused but useful words that's always a boon to one's vocabulary, but take off the "re-" and you get something very obscure: "condite" is an obsolete verb meaning both "to pickle or preserve" and "to embalm." If we add the prefix "in-" to "condite" we get "incondite," which means "badly put together," as in "incondite prose." All three words have Latin "condere" at their root; that verb is translated variously as "to put or bring together," "to put up, store," and "to conceal."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

Not a problem for her. My only fear is her being sucked into the gay rights mentality because of him. she was a liberal much more recently than i, and i see indicia of it every once in awhile. The whole women’s health bit, because she is a gynecologist and has worked with poor women, she is far more understanding of abortion than i am, though she is prolife. And she’s often critical of prolife conservatives of having bad science/facts. i told you i had to correct her on the cost of BC bc she bought that bs hook line and sinker until i sent a bunch of articles listing the $5 bc pills which cited sources. She also is not great on what a heinous organization PP is. She is interested in the YOU CAN PLAY organization that Brian Burke is affiliated with, so that’s why i feel like i need to occasionally put something out there to make sure she’s not being sucked in too far to that kind of thing.

I was going to say that DVRs work for hockey, too. Zap the commercials and intermissions. Start about 1.5 hours in and you will catch up to watch any OT in real time.

We refuse to pay Comcast another penny to get DVR service. I miss a lot of shows but I get a lot of reading done. Have you seen Turn yet? It’s pretty good and the first 2 episodes are on InDemand.

As usual, I cannot find the site to order the pre-printed cards, but this is a link to the prayer. Spiritual Warfare Prayer. As I said, it is not for the light of heart, this is getting serious, not an exorcism, but headed in that direction. (Note: the paragraph that starts In the Name of Jesus, I rebuke should be repeated 3X as well. It does not say that, but Fr. De Grandis taught us that)

Spiritual Warfare is the correct term, not exorcism. As a mother I have used this on my children, but not on anyone else. I just give them the card and if they feel called to pray like this for themselves, they can.

The prayer reads for oneself....we were taught to adjust some wording to use for another, but as I just said, I have only used this for my own children. I used it only then for real concerns I have had and when the Holy Spirit seems to lead me to it. I use the Rosary and Divine Mercy for a daily prayer routine. Of course, as a mother I am not above pleading with God, either. Oh, well. God hears all prayers.

No, I haven’t seen it. I am binge watching Game of Thrones now. I’ll finish the second season and start on the third tonight.

I also recorded, but haven’t watched yet, the new series Fargo on Fx.

Billy Bob Thorton stars. It’s inspired by the movie, but not using the same characters or plot. The Cohen brothers gave it a thumbs up.

I want to see that one too. The previews were just too bizarre to ignore. Plus Justified is done for the season. I can only watch it again so many times.

What a busy day and just about nothing to show for it-

The only thing that’s recondite
About Obama’s many speeches
Is where he gets the facts for
The world view that he preaches

His minions must be going to
A land of rainbows and song-
A perilous fact-finding trip
Where the vehicle is a bong

It may appeal to the Roman mob,
But to more of us it is no joke-
They should be talking under oath
And not blowing caterpillar smoke...

Oh that’s good. A+ for you. The latest lies emanate from having the Census Bureau report to the WH instead of the Commerce Dept.

The original owner of this property-not garage guy-apparently hauled in loads of soil many years ago and planted non-native stuff. Most of it is long dead, but when I got home I noticed a couple of climbing rose plants with red flowers just starting to bloom by the deck-they have climbed into a small ornamental tree.

I like strongly scented flowers best, and these have almost no scent-but the color is pretty so I cut a few blooms and put them in a cup, in front of the statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the LR-roses are Her flowers...

And over half of the American people believe Obama lies to us all or most of the time-he’s in good company with Nixon for sure...

Does cool weather affect the scent of flowers-it makes sense that it would-perfume smells stronger on a human in warm weather...

But the dead stuff is dead because the chemistry of the native soil will leach into any soil you bring, even if it is from a rain forest. People from the city just refuse to believe that, and plant a fortune in non-native stuff-it makes awfully expensive mulch...

There is solid limestone under the soil here, and the soil is very thin and has an alkaline ph-only native plants and trees can thrive in it for the most part-nearly everything else is wilted and dead within a couple years, but for natives and plants cultivated to be well adapted-like those healthy looking climbing roses...

I cut most of the front yard. Both mowers started. So I guess the “Stabil” additive did its job for winter storage.

There is a nice riding mower here that garage guy told me I’m welcome to use, but it will be awhile before I need to mow-what grass there is all is native varieties, and not very tall.

I’m more partial to a regular mower and weed eater, though-there is a long slope to the river-maybe 200 feet-getting more stony and rough as it goes down-I have visions of myself riding along, not paying attention and heading down the slope, picking up speed, unable to stop as I bounce down the stone path, over the rocky bank and crash into the cold water...
