AC/DC 'to retire following band member's health concerns' (Malcolm Young very ill)

Australia's most successful rock band AC/DC are thought to be retiring. Rumours surfaced on Tuesday morning that the band are set to split due to the ill health of one of their members, although it isn't clear as of yet who that member is or what the illness is. 3AW reporter Peter Ford told 2Day FM breakfast hosts Sophie Monk, Merrick Watts, Jules Lund and Mel B that 'we may never hear them perform or record again'.

McCartney and Ringo come out and perform at tributes for dead friends and one off stuff like that. And they all went out and did their own things. But the stones have no excuse. They all have to have had more money than god a long time ago. They went from having to have paramedics at their concerts for drug overdoses to having tjem on hand for their fans expiring of natural causes.

I absolutely detest AD/DC. The screaming / ranting I could never understand why people loved these guys. But on your comment on that they did not take themselves seriously I can personally attest to. Along time ago I waited tables and one Sunday morning in came AC/DC with their wives / sweeties. The guys were very nice and polite, their other halves were incredibly rude. I could not decide who was uglier, the band or their chicks...

Mccartney and ringo have toured for years since the beatles including recently. They certainly could retire and don’t need the money - nor do the stones. These people do it because that’s what musicians do. They play.

Yes, journey, elton john - the list goes on. Yes has retained good sound until recently. The last time I saw them it was definitely quite a step down for them. But to be 60+ in age and still perform a Yes set must be daunting. So I cut them a lot of slack. Most jazz musicians play til they die.

yes - obviously the beatles have not toured since the 1960s. :-). You said Mccartney and ringo just did occasional one-off shows which is incorrect. They both have regularly toured over the years. In recent times Mccartney toured in 2010 and 2012. A friend of mine attended a 2012 show. Ringo has been doing his allstar show for four years in a row until 2013.

An interviewer once asked Angus Young (lead guitarist and co-founder of the band) what his response was to people who say AC/DC have ten albums and they all sound exactly the same.

Angus retorted: those people are totally wrong, we have eleven albums and they all sound the same...

BTW Orangedog — (this may be slightly off topic) are you a Jeff Beck fan? I am amazed at how he continues to get better and better. At times he gets some sounds that almost remind me of a harmonica. Encouraging for those of us who are aging to see someone at that age still keep music fresh. :-)

But these old geezers who milk this gig well into their 60’s and 70’s like the rolling stones, putting out a crap record every two years as an excuse to go out on tour to milk their aging fan base.

What's even creepier is hearing them on the elevator music station.

Not to be a smartass, but in all honesty, there are a couple things at work IMO. First is how many of us ever hit the top of our respective professions? I mean the TOP?

Now consider how many of the one or two possibly that have could sustain that level for decades? One? the other? Neither?

THEN add in the nebulousness of being creative pitted against the changing tastes of the audience. If you take 1000 fans of a band at 16, 800 will be into totally different music at 30...while the new kids may not like your thing at all.

IMO, it’s a miracle a band like AC/DC (who I love)can get any real longevity at all. Any band really in ‘popular music’ since that definition varies lately by the literal week thanks to Beatport and the like.

TLDR version...IT’s HARRRRRDDD!!!

What you state is so true for the music industry for some strange reason and for reasons you state. However it is not true in the business world where I belong. I have been at this for decades and working harder and smarter than I ever did. Same with most older people I work with. I’m at my peak and getting close to retirement.
