Canned Food Gone Bad

Now thats theory and it does apply but as we know sometimes things just dont work out as well. Today my wife was opening a can of chopped tomatoes and as soon as the can was pierced the contents burst out in all directions. While there was no swelling, pressure had clearly built up inside, a clear sign of decomposition. The food inside didnt smell awfully bad, but it didnt smell good either.

Canned food is one of the best value for your dollar you can get for your food storage, but you need to monitor it. I myself recently went through my storage and found 3 cans of Spam two cans were sollowen and the third sound like an oil can when squezzed all three can were lest than a year old. I sent information from the cans to Hormel and they sent me coupons to replace the bad cans. Thunbs up for Hormel on standing behind their product!!

The steamboat Bertrand was heavily laden with provisions when it set out on
the Missouri River in 1865, destined for the gold mining camps in Fort
Benton, Mont. The boat snagged and swamped under the weight, sinking to the
bottom of the river. It was found a century later, under 30 feet of silt a
little north of Omaha, Neb.
Among the canned food items retrieved from the Bertrand in 1968 were brandied
peaches, oysters, plum tomatoes, honey, and mixed vegetables. In 1974,
chemists at the National Food Processors Association (NFPA) analyzed the
products for bacterial contamination and nutrient value. Although the food
had lost its fresh smell and appearance, the NFPA chemists detected no
microbial growth and determined that the foods were as safe to eat as they
had been when canned more than 100 years earlier.

Thanks, Kart. I have a lot of canned goods in my supplies that are due for rotation/discarding.
I’ve also been looking in to dehydrating veggies/meats/fruits. You can store massive quantities in minimal space for MANY years, and lose no nutritional value.

I have had so many cans of tomato products like tomato paste, or crushed tomatoes that spew when I open them, that I just started using them anyway, so far I haven’t gotten sick.

You do have to know what you are doing, and practice, if you intend to use dehydrated foods to prepare meals. Using them effectively is important.

I had a jar of Kraft mayonnaise go bad on me a couple of days ago. It was just reaching it’s “use by” date. I first noticed it did not taste quite right so I smelled it and sure enough it was bad. The thing which makes me a bit concerned is that my refrigerator is very cold. I had used about two thirds of it.
I called their toll free number and they are sending me a coupon. Still it should not have happened.

I agree. It’s an art getting this dehydrating thing down.
I did find this website that I’ve been obsessed with, lately. She shows how she dehydrates and demo’s recipes with her dehydrated goodies...

Dehydrating foods isn't that difficult. Using the dehydrated food to make tempting meals can be. I've got the live-in chef, so I've got an advantage in that regard. ;)
