Westboro Baptist Church to picket Oklahoma liquor store over sign mocking Fred Phelps' death

The Westboro Baptist Church is saying that it will picket an Oklahoma liquor store that put up a sign mocking the death of the group’s founder, Fred Phelps.

Phelps died on March 20 at the age of 84.

To commemorate the occasion, Moore Liquor decided to have a champagne sale and posted a sign reading, "Fred Phelps 1929-2014, Champagne 10% off! Not a coincidence."

The WBC doesn’t find the sign funny and plans to protest. The store sounds fine with it.

"I was a little reticent about putting up the sign in the first place because I have two good parents who raised me not to speak ill of the dead, but I couldn’t help feeling that the world was a better place without Fred Phelps," store owner Bryan Kerr told the Huffington Post.

"He did so much to spread his special brand of hatred while bastardizing Christian principles that I thought it might be appropriate to recognize his lack of corporeal existence with some celebration. As a Christian myself, I truly hope that Fred found some peace with God and maybe even had a change of heart before passing."

Notice they never picket Gay Pride Parades.

Indeed. I believe the "Westboro Baptist Church" may be a false-flag operation--sort of like the Monarchist Union of Central Russia, a supposed anti-Communist resistance organization in the Soviet Union during the 1920's that was actually run by the Soviet secret police.

As a Christian, I would be down at the liquor store to support those who protest the Westboro Baptist Church if I lived in Moore, OK.

There are too many people here taking Phelps and his ‘church’ at face value.

Their real goal was not their stated goal at all.

They were nothing but a front group, funded by dems, to make the real churches and religious people look bad.

Westboro isn’t Baptist.
They are a fringe group of crazy people being funded by lefties to make Christians look crazy.

Thinking about the morals of someone who would do that is enough to make your head explode.

Its a lesson we need to learn. They will do ANYTHING to further their agenda.

They’re as much Catholic as they are Baptist.

But at least the Catholics will say 'hello' to you in the liquor store.

The group is a cult.

Baptists you are thinking of live by an ancient book called the bible. These people have a little book Fred Phelps wrote which they use instead.

In America, there is nothing to stop a cult from calling themselves whatever they want.

Actually, they aren't crazy in the sense you're saying. The Phelps family is comprised of lawyers. They're in it for the money. Phelps might as well be a brand. They have a consistent strategy:

Phelps was a disbarred lawyer, founder of the Phelps Chartered law firm, and a former civil rights activist. He sought public office four times as a member of the Democratic Party. In the election for United States Senator for Kansas in 1992 , he received 49,416 votes (30.8%), coming in second after Gloria O'Dell (who subsequently lost to later presidential candidate Bob Dole). Phelps and his followers frequently picketed various events, such as military funerals , gay pride gatherings, high-profile political gatherings, university commencement ceremonies, performances of The Laramie Project, mainstream Christian gatherings and concerts with which he had no affiliation, arguing it was their sacred duty to warn others of God's anger, leading a group of motorcycle riders to form the Patriot Guard Riders to provide a non-violent, volunteer buffer between the protesters and mourners. That’s a joke.

Jews don’t recognize Jesus
Protestants don’t recognize the pope
Babtists don’t recognize eachother at the liquor store

I don’t see a downside for the liquor store.

If you go out fishing, always bring two Baptists. If you only bring one he'll drink all of your beer. (told to me by a Baptist)

Q: What’s the difference between a baptist and a methodist?
A: A methodist will say “hi” when you see him in the liquor store.

At the First Baptist Bar and Grill
It's the only church in the bible belt that smells like a whisky still
When the sinners finish one more round
We'll have dinner on the ground
And go inside and hell, pray we don't get killed
