Civilian who killed Sailor at Naval Station Norfolk identified
"Norfolk, Va. The civilian gunman accused of killing a sailor aboard the destroyer Mahan on Monday night before being fatally shot is Jeffrey Tyrone Savage, the Navy announced on Thursday.
The Navy says Savage, 35, drove his 2002 Freightliner through Gate 5 just after 11 p.m. He then went to Pier 1 and left the truck and tried to get onto the USS Mahan.
He was stopped by security there and thats when a struggle started. They say Savage disarmed a petty officer of the watch and Savage then used the weapon to kill Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Mark Mayo, 24. Savage was then shot and killed by other security forces on the scene.
Officials say Savage had a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential. This ID alone does not authorize base access. They say it must be used along with other documents to gain entry.
They say Savage did not have any reason to be on Naval Station Norfolk.
NewsChannel 3 spoke to Savages mother who is apologizing to the sailors mother about what happened. She tells NewsChannel 3 that Savage was a good father and son, but something was going on with him. She would not go into detail about exactly what that something was.

In 2005, Savage was convicted of manslaughter in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
Before that, he served time in Maryland for dealing crack.
The Navy says he worked for Majettes Trucking.
Labarbara Majette says he didnt technically work for her; instead he drove a truck she leased out to Rail Port Trucking on South Military Highway in Chesapeake.
I dont know anything. They let us know that he had the credentials, he had the experience. And you know he was a driver, says Majette.
NewsChannel 3 went to Rail Port where he drove trucks to see what his former co-workers had to say about the 35-year-old from Portsmouth.
No one there wanted to talk including a man who appeared to be managing the business.
Its unclear how long Savage had worked at Rail Port.
Labarbara Majette, who owned the truck he drove didnt know anything about Savages work status with the company.
His former employer did not want to talk to NewsChannel 3 about if they knew of Savages violent past.
Its one that included two different stints in jail, including being locked up for manslaughter as recently as five years ago.
I thought you were talking about security AT the ship, not on the base. No, this guy should not have been on the base. Which is why him getting shot at the boat indicates THEY were about as “on the ball” as they could have been.
Sorry for the confusion.
A misconception here is that he was not actually driving a full rig, but the tractor only.
His most like story at the gate would be that he was there to pick up a now-empty trailer that hadn’t been fully unloaded before he finally left to go into town for food, fuel & required rest period. No bill of lading needed coming in, because no trailer, let alone load.
Not intended to excuse or mitigate anything about the security; just a correction of what he was driving.
Jeffrey Tyrone Savage
My sources tell me that Mayo pushed her to the deck to protect her and to get at the assailaint, who then shot Mayo.
Mayo acted herocially here. He was not on duty on the ship, the USS Mahan, but saw what was occurring in his role with base security/watch, and came to the scene.
IMHO, the guy should ultimately have a vessel named after him. His is much more deserving than somone like Ceasar Chavez or John Murtha.
Thank you for taking the time to clarify that point.
This nation mourns the loss of this young sailor, a true hero in every sense of the word.
unfortunately, until ‘we the people’ manage to reign in our elected officials to remind them of their solemn oath of office, and take a 180 turn from this administration’s treasonous agenda, this is all par for the course.
Looks like he was a prime candidate.

Momma sez her rageboy spawn - with a lengthy and violent criminal history - was a good boy, so a religion of peace must have been a natural fit.
A real apology would have required the truth, not this predictable lying blather about the "good" son who was acting out of character. Sure lady, how many other "good" sons did you inflict upon society?
My dad was a guard for over 30 years and he always warned that they were gonna be the ones to slit our throats.
Every year the guards had to deal with “Ramariot”.
They’d go crazy, attack the guards and the guards could hardly respond due to the “civil rights” jerks interfering.
One year, they cut my dad’s best friend’s throat, ear to ear.
He lived.
Another year, one kicked a Beagle pup another guard had brought in for dad and he had to sit there on duty, watching it slowly die.
Some other inmates dealt with the kicker.
He...well.
Never mind.
Very likely.
Exactly....she got the contract and then subcontracted with another firm. Gee, if only we could cut out the LaBarbara middleminority and save ourselves some cash.
In this case, the surname sure matched!
As long as he votes Democrat he will.
