In your opinion, what is the best comic strip to ever appear in newspapers (like Peanuts or whatever) and what is your most hated comic strip?
Absolute puke worst: Doonesbury, the MSNBC of comics.
Best: Dilbert, Far Side, Calvin & Hobbes, BC
Worst: Doonesbury
Grin & Bear It and Bloom County are (or were) the best topical cartoons.
Jeff MacNelly and Michael Ramirez the best editorial cartoons.
Calvin & Hobbes besides being very funny is also able to slip in philosophical questions. Arlo & Janis, The Grizzwells and The Born Loser are also all funny cartoons.
My favorites: Garfield, Curtis, Beetle Bailey, Blondie, Lola
Worst/execrable: Doonesbury, This Modern World (about as close to pure evil put in ink)
I should have added BC, Wizard of Id and Herman.
There are so many I miss. So I will just name the first two that came to mind;
Lil Abner
Steve Canyon
And darn near everyone listed here before I got to mine.
Li’l Abner. Fine social satire.
Calvin and Hobbes. When this ceased I quit reading the comics.
Prince Valiant was good from the 1930s to the 1990s.
Worst: Doonsbury. I refused to read it back in 1971.
Sign of a good ego is the ability to laugh at yourself. Something that Libs can’t do!
Well, I’ll have 2nd the “Pogo” nomination above. Another top favorite of mine is a strip called “Arnold” which did not last long at all.
But honestly, I don't think I've regularly read the comics in 10 years.
Best are Gasoline Alley and Prince Valiant!
Best:
Calvin&Hobbs
Bloom County
Farside
BC
Over the Hedge (think that is what it was)
others I cannot remember, been so long
The Worst:
That one with that little Negro kid that hated everyone
Doonesbury
Most of the rest were dreck to be ignored...........
Steve Canyon is the one who introduced the SEALs to the general public during the big war following WWII.
Best: Ramirez’ editorials, Pearls Before Swine, Dilbert, Calvin & Hobbes, Far Side
Worst: Doonesbury
Non Sequitor
Excellent satire, and boy did he love to lampoon the Gen-X/Y/Z slackers..........
Calvin and Hobbes, Bloom County, Far Side, Dilbert and of course, Prince Valiant.
Willie & Ethel was usually pretty good, as well.
