Westboro Baptist Church founder Rev. Fred Phelps Sr. is in hospice care and near death, according to family and church members say. His estranged son says the longtime pastor's passing would put his followers in a crisis, because the church's members "think that death is a judgment from God."
"So far, that illusion has held because none of them has passed," Nathan Phelps continues in an interview with the Topeka Capital-Journal .
The church's members are convinced they will be taken up by Jesus Christ, he tells the newspaper. "They're clear about that, that they're not going to feel the sting of death," he says.

I would guess that when senility started to set in, he was less capable of controlling his behavior and words. Probably then the true reason for his rabidly anti Christian behavior came out. Someone that vehement is hiding something. We saw it with Jimmy Swaggart’s histrionic railings against sexual sins, and then his reason came out. Phelps is probably fighting against years of his own forbidden sexual cravings.
Phelps is loathed on Free Republic, but of course the MSM knows better.
They are a cult. I’m very happy for those who managed to get out.

I suspect that has soon as he cashes in his chips that whole family will fight for control of the church. That eldest daughter will want it and fight tooth and nail for it.
