After telling the congregation at the Miracle Faith World Outreach Church that he had been unfaithful to his wife, Bishop Bobby Davis died.
"After the service on Sunday the bishop's family asked us to remain in the church and the bishop confessed to us something that happened long ago," church elder Judy Stovall told the Connecticut Post. "He wanted to come clean with all of us. He wanted to ask our forgiveness."
Before he died, church members were screaming at Davis to show him their support.
"We were shouting, 'We forgive you, we love you,' but the stress of all of it -- he had a heart attack," Stovall said.

Exactly right. The same thing Jimmy "I have bent over backwards" Swaggert did, the only difference is Swaggert did it on Television. I think that there is a special place in Hell for people that humiliate their spouse like that in public.
No he had to get right with his wife and family. If a child resulted from this affair (Jesse Jackson), he had to get right with that woman and child as well.
The video said he had confessed to his wife. No mention of a love child. So I don’t know where you are coming from.
He's not a idiot. He did the right thing and it's far harder to stand in front of a whole congregation and admit your sin than to do it behind closed doors so no one else knows.
Private confession is the easy way out.
If his heart was that bad, something else would have got him anyway.
Besides, if God wanted him around, he would have lived.
Probably more people than anyone would suspect.
Stuff like that is hard to keep secret.
I wouldn't be surprised that there were suspicions and him coming clean is the right thing to do.
Perhaps he didn’t confess all.
What happened to persons in Acts when they fudged the truth before other Christians? Just a thought.
Publically embarrassing and humiliating his wife is the right thing to do?
The article said he confessed to his wife. The next step is to tender his resignation for "personal reasons", not make her look like a fool in front the rest of the community.
"We were shouting, 'We forgive you, we love you,"
They didn't say we love your sin, they said we love you.
I believe the Christian aphorism is "Love the sinner, but hate the sin."
Perhaps someone who is actually a Christian can verify this?
You are correct.
Over the last week or so I have seen quite a few self professing "Christians" say quite a few un-Christian and un charitable things about others that claim to be Christian. I guess it really came to a head yesterday on two threads, when I saw the glee at the news that Fred Phelps Sr. is near death. Instead of praying that he gets himself right with God they are hoping he gets sent to hell and that people picket his funeral etc...
Ah the luxury of not being Christian, I can guiltlessly hope he has the particularly toasty warm seat he worked so diligently to earn...
I know that. But I don’t see a reason for the IF. He publicly admitted his sins. That is going the extra step.
Hey, at least he was the only one struck down. David caused the death of 70,000 people for his infidelity.
Only a coward would blame the victim. He didn’t make his wife look like a fool. Most people are mature enough to realize the sin was his, and no reflection on his wife.
Hiding in a dark booth, *confessing* it to a priest, and getting a slap on the wrist, a few trips around the rosary, a few Hail Mary’s and Our Father’s and you’re good to go, is nothing compared to the courage that it takes to admit sin in front of a group of people.
He now has accountability which private confession to a priest does not offer.
“Publically embarrassing and humiliating his wife is the right thing to do?”
I have to agree with verga on this. You know that woman feels as low as dirt right now. Plus I know what people in that church are saying. “Who’s the ‘other woman’” and “which woman in the church was it?”. I can see them now gathering around talking about it! One protestant pastor that I’m friends with has a word for it, he calls it a “Holy Huddle”. Now you know that wife did not need this.
Some one brought up Clinton and that is the way it should have been. Bill told Hillary at home and Hillary threw a lamp at him. That is the way it should be no need for all of us to know and for gossip to start.
I know of a pastor who was removed from the pulpit for infidelity but everyone who knew was told to keep it quiet. But something like that is hard to keep quiet.
When a pastor is suddenly removed, it’s pretty obvious.
There is far less opportunity for gossip when a brief explanation is given than having someone just *disappear*.
Also, since he confessed to his wife, I’d bet that they discussed his public confession before he did it. If she hadn’t wanted him to do it, or felt it was unnecessary, she could have told him *No*.
There’s no indication in the article of whether his wife knew about this or not, but I’d say she knew it was coming and didn’t stop him.
God tells us to be sure that our sin will find us out. We can’t hide it and better our admitting it than someone else exposing it for us.
I suppose that is possible but that should not be a reason for not doing what is right.
Also, if he was exposed, the same thing would have happened. It just can't be stopped.
The circles I run in, nobody would be gossiping trying to figure out who it was. Mostly the attitude is that it's nobody's business and it's irrelevant to know who was involved.
You are wrong on all counts. I hope you never have to experience anything like this.
He always was an overachiever.
