Apple rumored to be in the background, regarding Tesla?
2/25/14 | (self)

OK just heard a rumor (I think I got this right) that Apple is rumored to be somewhere around Tesla.

I would like to say NO.

Apple is an outsourcer, and does nothing but outsource.

NO.

Apple stay away from Tesla.

I see Tesla worth more than Apple in a decade. Selling it now would be too cheap

This is nothing but a completely BS rumor started by an article speculating about where Apple could invest its huge cash holding. Nothing to it. Go back to reading your comics.

It would be hubris for Apple to invest in a field about which it knows nothing. The landscape is littered with failed electric car companies. There is no reason to think that Tesla will be any different, over the long run.

I dunno.

I heard it (I think I heard it) on Fox Business News just after the start of Varney and Company this morning.

If I heard it right, I strongly object to this.

Do not sell out to Apple.

Apple is an anti-American company at this point.

Imo. Bring back American jobs.

Apple is one of the few American companies still left. They don’t pay lobbyists or journalists for favors and they’re building huge data and assembly plants in America.

My guess is this:

Apple has watched IBM and Microsoft come and go as the business computer and then the home pc became the big thing in computers, respectively. Now personal devices are the big thing, and Apple is on top. But some day, personal devices will be nearly commoditized, and Apple knows it.

Where to? What saved Apple twenty years ago was hardware. And right now, the big hardware item that looks to become the next big thing is lithium batteries. Right now, Apple is the big consumer of lithium batteries, but soon electric cars will be. So I’m guessing Apple is looking to get off the roller coaster of personal electronics and into something that will continue to branch into new markets.

Also, Tesla and Apple are both largely outsourcers. And Tesla expects to have to become heavily involved with China, which Apple has already mastered.

The problem is that Tesla is already priced to join the Big 5 auto manufacturers. I think that’s a realistic ambition, but it hardly means Apple will be buying low.

The good news is that if Apple is sniffing around Tesla — and the notion is that some analysts think they SHOULD be, not that they ARE — Apple’s interest in Tesla only makes sense if Apple sees Tesla as the future business focus, not merely as something for Apple to take apart: Tesla’s price is based on exected future market share, not assets; its market cap is 25 times its assets.

If Apple buys Tesla, it will be because Apple sees the long range worth of both companies as primarily lithium-battery companies.

Interesting.

You have some documentation on this?

All I see is a huge assembly project in China.

China. Are not all iPhones made now, in China?

I am willing to be talked out of my anti-Apple mode at the moment.

Please. Do show:

Sure, they could have been talking about this speculation - and that ALL it is.

This is how rumors spread and become grander over time.

Well rumors can be that way.

However here is the “rumor” reported by the LA Times.

One week ago, for what it’s worth.

Maybe you should talk to someone who has lived in Silicon Valley.
Only complex bigger than Apple in SV might be Google but its hard to say.
Apple, like most high tech companies has their hardware assembled overseas.
Design is done in the USA and those are the jobs we need to keep.

Apple works with many other USA companies for component design, packaging and electronics.

I see your passion but its directed in the wrong direction

I am typing this on an ipod touch so I am not going to provide links.

But. . .

HUGE data farm in NC

The Mac Pro , Apple’s flagship $5k desktop is made in Texas

Apple is second sourcing iPhones and iPads to Brazil (not US , but better than Red China)

I disagree in part.

We need to bring back American jobs.

I’m series. American jobs. We have been sending American jobs to other countries for more than an entire generation.

Bring back American jobs.

“Design is done in the USA and those are the jobs we need to keep.”

... and a significant portion of those workers are here on guest worker visas. I have to agree with the other posters that we need to find a way to bring back the manufacturing jobs, the IE’s and MfgE’s that go with it. Otherwise, Apple just employs foreign designers and engineers over here while outsourcing the manufacturing-related employment. Not good.

There is a high possibility that Tesla and Apple will work together on a new technology battery plant. Although significantly different in size of the batteries, both companies are dependent on batteries to differentiate themselves from their competition.

That is a rumor made up by someone who has too much time on their hands and too much alcohol or cocaine (or both) on their brain
