Austin, Texas Police Chief Art Acevedo was asked to defend the actions of his officers, who subdued and arrested a jogging woman because she was wearing earbuds and couldnt hear their instructions. His response to the controversy was this: It could be worseat least she wasnt sexually assaulted.
That response upset many Texas residents, and Acevedo was forced to walk back his comments on Monday.
Austin police arrested the jogging woman last week. They were stationed at an intersection near the University of Texass Austin campus, giving jaywalking tickets to dozens of people. The woman ran right past them, unable to hear because of her earbuds. Cops pursued and restrained the confused woman, eventually placing her in a squad car and charging her failure to carry identification and violating a traffic signal.
The incident was recorded by an innocent bystander, who turned the footage over to local news. That bystander, Chris Quintero, said the police behaved badly. Many Texans agreed.
But when asked to comment on the situation, Acevedo said that his officers hadnt behaved nearly as badly as officers around the country who are routinely caught committing sexual assault.
Cops are actually committing sexual assaults on duty so I thank God that this is what passes for a controversy in Austin, Texas, he said according to CNN.
He also praised the mediocrity of the Austin police department.
And Im glad that Im here having to address mediocrity, he said.
It was a comparison that Acevedo soon regretted, and on Monday, he apologized and said his choice of words had been poor.
During the press conference I attempted to place the arrest into context by bringing attention to the fact that law enforcement deals with many acts of serious misconduct, he said. This includes recent instances in the news of sexual assault by police officers in other cities. In hindsight I believe the comparison was a poor analogy, and for this I apologize.
While the comparison may not have been an apt or flattering one for Austin police, it is nevertheless true.
So then the officer grabbing her arm because she wouldn't stop made her suddenly forget her name???
She was suddenly stricken with acute identity amnesia that incidentally was cured when she was later put in the squad car???
<>You speak of facts and evidence, what about the witness who obtained the video stating this was bad conduct on the officers part?<>
Are you referring to the You Tube video that I posted at Post #75???
Go watch it and tell us all here if you see any police bad conduct or is it just police doing their job.
She lucky she wasn’t raped, the Chief says...
that oughtta cost him his job
It was definitely an indiscrete statement unless he knows something and if he does he should spit it out.
sounded like an implicit threat to me
You speak of facts and evidence, what about the witness who obtained the video stating this was bad conduct on the officers part?
What about witness statement evidence?
Does that not fit your agenda?
Are you referring to the You Tube video
Can read the above words? It was the witness who stated this was bad conduct on the officers part. No?
Were you there or was the witness there?
Why are you in such denial?
Then why have you embellished and repeatedly brought all this up?
Now, it's seems according to you, this entire incident is all about her not showing these over weight cops her ID? Is this your position?
If so why have you been attempting to discredit the young lady at every turn? That seems a bit odd.
Could she have been so pissed off and startled to the point where she didn't feel she was being legitimately treated, at the time and basically told these overweight agents of the local government to go f*** themselves?
Ya think the landslide of national bad publicity, which brought out the Chief, who then made reckless, stupid juvenile comments that he's now had to apologized for, was worth it?? Jay walking?
lol....
Ya think these cops will ever learn that these college kids and other people on the streets, jay walking or not are not some enemy and should not be treated and disrespected like some foreign enemy?
Ya remember me telling you about the wide spread growing distrust of govenrment and law enforcement in America?
Ya think this this growing nationwide distrust of government and it's agents are somehow misplaced?
<>Why are you in such denial?<>
Me??? Denial of what???
You are the one in denial.
I gave you the video and asked you to show me bad police behaviour and you can’t find any.
You have several articles posted here that explain what went down from witnesses on the scene and the police but you refuse to believe them.
The only bad behaviour alleged by anyone is that the officer grabbed her arm as she was running from him. If that’s your bad behaviour then you should change your screen name to S-T-R-E-T-C-H.
Then the police said that she threw her down on the ground in order to keep from being handcuffed — which is SOP for college protesters and has been for 50 years.
And there is no one disputing this account — no one.
So don’t lecture me about denial when you are the one in it up to your neck.
Uh, it was the witness who obtained the video who stated this was bad conduct on the officers part...
Not me...lol...hello!!
OK, so now it’s not about her running or failing to stop, not about her hearing the officers and not the way she reacted when she was grabbed from behind???
Then why have you embellished and repeatedly brought all this up?
Now, it’s seems according to you, this entire incident is all about her not showing these over weight cops her ID? Is this your position?

But you are believing him even though he has given no specifics or evidence.
What specifically did he say was the bad behaviour????
What specifically — were they eating donuts while making the arrest???
What did he say that they did wrong???
He posted the video as his evidence.
So you have seen the video now I assume —
Then tell me what do you see in the video that is bad police behaviour???
OK, so now its not about her running or failing to stop, not about her hearing the officers and not the way she reacted when she was grabbed from behind???
Then why have you embellished and repeatedly brought all this up?

Now your going after the witness who said he felt the over weight officers behaved badly?
You’ve attempted to discredit the jogger at every opportunity, now you’re going after the witness?
Does anyone here have credibility in your mind outside the two over weight officers?
Show me from the video what the police were doing wrong.
Show me the statements of any named witnesses and what specifically they say that the police did that was wrong.
Show me —
So far all you have is the producer of the video who says they behaved badly but he can’t name any bad behaviour or show any bad behaviour on his video.
Show me the bad behaviour and you might have a case but as of now you don’t have a leg to stand on.
Then the police chief sticks both feet in his mouth attempting to defend these over weight officers with heavy badges...
And you see nothing wrong here?
Why am I not surprise Mr. Chip?
Hey Chip, why do ya think there is now such wide spread distrust for government and law enforcement?
Grabbing someone running from behind, who was simply jogging wearing headphones
She was ignoring the police who were calling to her. Try ignoring a police siren behind you sometime and when they eventually pull in front of you try claiming that you had the radio up and didn't hear them and then see where that gets you.
allegedly jay walking at worst
It wasn't jaywalking. She had just violated the electronic traffic signal and crossed before the light changed.
then handcuffing her
They didn't handcuff her for that -- they handcuffed her when she refused to identify herself after she was stopped and began wailing like a banshee that she did nothing wrong after crossing against the light.
then putting her on the pavement
She put herself on the pavement by dropping down on her ass to try to keep from being handcuffed
demanding identification, as if she jogs with her purse
She doesn't need her purse to give the police her name and that was what she was refusing to give.
like she was a fleeing felon or murderer
You're embarrassing yourself now with your hyperbolees.
Over reacting to the point where people on the streets are taking video the incident
People video everything nowadays even bimbos sitting down on the sidewalk and screaming like banshees.
where witnesses stated they felt the cops exhibited bad conduct
You mean the poster of this video that he titles "Cops Throw Woman on the Ground for Jaywalking" which doesn't show the cops throwing a woman on the ground at all and she wasn't there for jaywalking either. He had two big lies in one video title -- and this prefabricator is your witness???
Get Real --
why do ya think there is now such wide spread distrust for government and law enforcement?
Why do ya think there is now such wide spread distrust for what people post on the internet????
Why do ya think there is now such wide spread distrust for what people post on the internet????
You deny this?
It seems clear your trust lies with government, it's agents and CNN...
Looken sharp there Mr. Chip.
As has been pointed out before, and is common knowledge, if a Mundane grabs an officer's arm from behind, that is "assaulting a police officer", and it's a serious crime.
Is there one set of laws for the Coercive Class, and another set of laws for the peasants? We saw something similar with Bill Clinton - perjuring himself in the face of a federal judge was treated MUCH differently than when a Mundane did it...
