You ever heard that The true test of anothers intelligence is how closely their opinion is to yours?
Bump
The “Newbie” you are referring to would be Cinnamon... but VERY resource heavy, beautiful eye-candy..also, AFAIK 8as far as I know), all Linux have the terminal/command line option.
Kind of like me being able to open up the DOS Box back before XP.. I could still use the previous (prior to Win) options to have control of my own darn PC (ME doesn’t count.. not sure what the heck ME was :p).
I STILL recommend you trying out KDE (doesn’t have to be Mint).. Will take some getting used to, but easy to learn if you have the patience.. about a week or less. AND, you have the control that almost no other distro gives you (except for XFCE, which is more basic knowledge of PC.. DEF not for beginners (WIN, nor DOS, nor Mac... btw, Mac is based on Unix... they won’t even admit that :p).
Cannot really disagree with this although I would like to know more about BSD and ReactOS and other operating systems
Although I have NEVER seen any ads on Ubuntu!
Agreed. I have used KDE before for most of my previous playing/trying. I also used an early KDE iteration on both AIX and HPUX. I played with Gnome once - didn’t like it.
Really, I guess what I want is a Win7-like ease of use without the Win problems.... and more control over the system when necessary.
Appreciate the heads-up about the Mint pkg control options.
Whoah.. ty!
How in the world an article can list the "Top 10" Linux distros, without even a passing mention of RedHat or CentOS, is totally beyond me. RedHat has been the gold standard in Linux for over a decade if not two, it's the largest contributor to the Linux community, the first open source company to reach the billion-dollar mark, and its enterprise product line is second to none.
CentOS is RedHat Enterprise Linux, without the cost -- free as in beer as well as free as in speech. CentOS is used by individuals as well as companies all over the world, who want the best possible functionality and stability (RHEL), but are willing to forego paid support.
And Fedora (which gets a mid-list mention) is the cutting-edge, development-oriented branch sponsored by RedHat. It's not like Fedora exists in a vacuum -- but this article would lead one to believe that it does.
Can somebody explain to me how the two best pedigreed distros got left out of this list???
OK... I’m officially jealous!
I thought I was badazz with my 26” monitor.
Start here (xmms), and maybe follow the links to something more recent. I just checked and atrpms has xmms available.
Can’t imagine what I would have with a 26”... 3 of 4 are 21”.. 1 is still 17” :p
actually remember reading this same wiki a couple of years back... but the links came up dead (on actual same usability compared to WinAmp)...
I sometimes play music on-line, and NOTHING yet has compared to it :(
Closest I have gotten is an app/music player called Clementine, but it skips a lot :p
Bookmark, and thanks!
Using SolyD and it’s the best I’ve used and I’ve tried most. Updates are thoroughly tested before release. Aptly named as it is solid as a rock with all the rescources of Debian at your fingertips.
And yes--I do know that you can ue RH and Cent as your desktop. :D
I use Audacious.
I am now going back to that now... Amerok is STILL almost unusable :/
RedHat is pay to use.. that is what separates it :p
