Do you have an iPad or other tablet by any chance, or are you using a laptop? Many of the old text adventure games are now in the public domain and can be downloaded for free. Zork I, II, and III are a lot of fun and are available.

If you have a tablet, there is an app called “Frotz” that let’s you download and play tons of text adventures, both classic ones and newly user-created ones as well. If you are using a laptop, I would just start by searching for “Zork” and you will probably find it and many others.

Don’t know if text adventures (”Interactive Fiction”) interest you, but it is a thought.
