Light bulb factory closes; End of era for U.S. means more jobs overseas

Thanks for nothing Fred Upton...

Upton switches position on CFL light bulbs

funny thing about this is - someone pushed these incandescent bulb bans way back to pay off someone. And those who stood to make the most money in the rush to get (force everyone to get) “sensitive, responsible” squiggly-mercury bulbs were likely foreign manufacturers with dubious political intents. But technology being the mother of invention birthed LED bulbs that last 20+ years, use less power than all of them, and is crashing the squiggly market. As these take over, the feel-good mercury bulb pushers who brainwashed our kids into making fun of non-squiggly bulbs ala Communist Youth Leaguers - have lost out to innovators. I’ll take innovation over coercion/compliance any time.

Yes, I know. It was/is a really really stupid law.

I have more than a years supply of 60 watt incandescent light bulbs on hand. For possibly another year you will be able to buy them in some places as the inventory dwindles.

But at some point it will come home to the masses, when they cannot buy decent light bulbs for their fixtures. Especially the decorative flame bulbs for upscale light fixtures.

LED lights may be a better solution, but at this point they are not practical for many fixtures.

So. When we retake the senate we might be able to move in the direction of returning leadership in this country to the adults. If we still have any adult leadership.

This article doesn’t make sense. Suddenly, half-way down, we have the incandescent bulb back? Do we? How did that happen? I couldn’t make heads nor tails of it.

What the ban means is you can’t buy light bulbs for $0.50 any longer.
I’ve got eight closet lights that collectively might be turned on for 5 minutes per month. How long is the wait for a ROI in that case?

I don’t think this makes a difference. My understanding is the factories are already closed. If the equipment is still in place, they could reopen them but if they’ve shipped it off, then this is an empty gesture. No jig dancing for me.

"The lesson is obvious: tribal politics are a distraction. What you don’t know about those 1000-page bills can hurt you, no matter who is in the Oval office and which side of the aisle is promoting them."

Too sadly true, especially since Congress Critters don't seem capable of READING them, or if so, understanding what they entail in the larger scope of things.

So here's the deal: The omnibus budget didn't provide funding for the ENFORCEMENT of the ban law.

Living with weasels (apologies to actual weasels). Not that you needed any more reason to disrespect congress...
