The Seattle Seahawks have revealed that a good part of their defensive strategy at the Super Bowl came from the fact that they were able to decode Peyton Manning's hand signals on the field. Controversial corner back Richard Sherman said that he and his fellow defenders cracked the code that the Denver Broncos quarterback was using, meaning that they knew exactly what to expect for each play. 'We knew what route concepts they liked on different downs, so we jumped all the routes. Then we figured out the hand signals for a few of the route audibles in the first half,' he said.

Richard Sherman’s an idiot for telling the whole world about it, now Manning will change how he communicates, and so will other teams.
I agree...plus...all it takes is one good hit,and that “running QB” will run no more.
Hand signals?
How does that work. Aren’t most offensive players looking down field or across the line and listening for audibles. They aren’t looking at the quarterback for hand signals. How are down linemen going to see hand signals.

I don’t see him telling anybody anything they don’t already know. Peyton tends to be very predictable, he has a handful of passes he really likes and most of his pre-snap adjustments are figuring out which one will be open and getting the rest of the team on page. It’s how NO got the pick six on him his last trip to the big game, they gave him a look he frequently responds to by throwing to the left side flat, and at snap they backed out of the look jumped the route and ran it in. You can learn a lot with 2 weeks of tape review.
Then Mr. Manning better grow some personality!

Honestly, I'm not surprised to hear this because Seattle seemed to be on top of nearly every play Denver tried to run. The Hawks defense, which is damn good anyway, never seemed the least bit tentative in their alignment or coverages.
I expected a close, low scoring game. It's obvious now they had a damn good idea what was coming most of the time, and they had the talent to shut it down.
Hats off to them and their coaching staff. If you know what plays the other team will run, even the worst team will stuff the opponent. A good defense like Seattle, and you have a blowout.

Yeah, it’s more like reading the pitcher than peeking at what the catcher is calling for. Both are legit and not cheating, but you don’t hear baseball guys usually admit either one right after the fact, sometimes it comes out through clubhouse channels. I take it he was using hand signals to the receivers or something, can’t see anyone else being able to see it?
In baseball there is a quick way to both see if the hitter is peaking at the catcher and to get it to stop. Call for low and away breaking ball by the sign but throw a heater up and in. If the batter dives out over the plate and has to deal with 90+ the experiment has been successful and is self-correcting.

I agree. The problem with the pure pocket passers today is you need a guy who is 6'6" with the brains and talent to get it over the monster linemen you have today. As great as guys like Johnny U were in their day, they would not even be able to see their receives over these monsters coming at them now.
Those guys are rare, so it's more likely with see more of the sprint out QBs whose careers are limited because they will eventually be injured and slowed down on their speed.
It's the nature of the game... everything bigger, faster, stronger.

This is a youtube of Sherman talking about how he studies for the games. Watching game film consumes all/most of his time off field.
Not sure if it is in this video, but somewhere he was talking about something like “there are only a certain number of plays they can run from a certain position...” And then goes on to explain the various nuances than can give a clue to which of those few plays they’ll run.
Pretty amazing how smart probably ALL of these guys at the NFL level are.
The down linemen listen for the audibles. They even audible between each other. The receivers and backs look for the hand or body signals. When playing on the road with the crowd noise, they often can't even hear the QB audibles.
While I may not know much about football - I do recognize that.

Well that’s not what loudmouth said the day after the game. he basically said they got lucky and were expecting Manning to have a big game. This guy is all about tooting his own horn. Seattle won because they got Manning to move more than he likes and their defense played lights out. I like the Seahawks, but also am a big Peyton Manning fan. Sherman needs to just shut up.

Seahawks defense won the game. If Russell Wilson was a pocket passer, Seattle still wins the game.
