FSU 2013-14 the best college football team of all time?
Vanity | Vanity

Posted on 02/02/2014 2:11:20 PM PST by 2harddrive

Is the FSU 2013-14 team the best college football team of all time? Oklahoma, Alabama, Ohio State, Miami, and even the Florida Gaytors have all fielded excellent teams. But which is the BEST of all time? One person I know insists it is this year's FSU team. But, what say YOU?

Let me *think* - Didn’t FSU have some weaknesses on defense this year?

1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers

Absolutely! They beat 4 top ten teams by an average of over 20 pts.

Texas didn’t lose a game for 3 years [30 game win streak] until they were upset by Notre Dame in 1971 in the Cotton Bowl. Crucial play was Joe Theisman’s “quick kick” on 3rd down for Notre Dame when they were backed up to their end zone ...

This is comical.

They aren’t even in the top 25 of all time.

The 1971 Nebraska team with Johnny Rodgers. They were the undefeated national champions, beating Alabama 38-6 in the Orange Bowl.

Right team, but maybe the wrong year....

1971 Nebraksa Cornhuskers beat Oklahoma in the “Game of the Century”...Jerry Tagge, Johnny Rogers...Lyle Bremser doing the play-by-play - “Man, woman, and child, I never thought I’d live so long to see a football game like this...”

The Sporting News voted the 1971 Nebraska team, “The Best Team” of the last 125 years. This vote may have taken place before Nebraska’s 1995 season, however, so you may be right ;-)

Either way, it damn sure ain’t FSU.

This really depends on how you measure excellence in college football. A team's record isn't even relevant to this discussion because every team under consideration for this honor would have been unbeaten for that particular season.

So you end up using other measures like strength of schedule and margins of victory. The 2013 FSU team falls flat because of a weak schedule.

The 1971 Nebraska team is rated by many experts to be the best of all time, mainly because of its overwhelming margins of victory and a schedule that included many top teams.

The 1995 Nebraska team probably stands out for one number alone: 27 of the players on that team later played in the NFL. To give you a sense of how amazing that number is, just realize that there are only 22 starting offensive and defensive players on a football team. Throw in up to four more "starters" (punter, kicker, punt returner and kick returner) and you still only get to 26.

Hard to say but players are bigger/stronger/faster pretty much every year. Training methods and facilities of today would astound a player from the 60s.

So it’s pretty much impossible to make valid comparisons over several decades in my view.

Yes, Bigbob, you are right... it’s tough to pick between the ‘71 and ‘95 Huskers. Coin-flip. But JRA is right. This year’s FSU team ain’t even in the Top 25.

Probably Nebraska '71 or Nebraska '95.

Miami '01?

FSU '13-'14 isn't close. I might even pick Army '45 over FSU '13-'14 based on what I've read, but I never saw that Army team play.

If being up 35-10 at the half is close to being blown out then I guess you’re right.

1971 Nebraska best team ever

That year, the final national polls had Nebraska #1, Oklahoma #2, Colorado #3....all from the Big 8 Conference

Not only 1971 Nebraska was the top team ever...the Big 8 that season may have been the best conference season ever
