Most people would be terrified at the thought that their world might soon transform into a state of complete "anarchy." However, in one sense that is precisely what humanity needs.
To many, the term "anarchy" implies violent chaos and bloody mayhem, and a complete breakdown of organized society-- a situation no decent person wants. What the word literally means, however, is "rule by no one," a society without any ruling class. And while people are right to believe that authoritarian "law and order" is the opposite of "anarchy," they are wrong to put their faith in the former, or to fear the latter. In fact, those events which best epitomize the negative meaning of "anarchy"--chaos, death and destruction--have always been the direct result of government. Yet many people still fear freedom more than they fear government.
More and more people are now coming to realize that what society really needs is not a new flavor of authoritarian domination, but a complete absence of political power (which should not be confused with a lack of cooperation or organization). Whether "left" or "right," government is never about getting along or cooperating; it is about one group of people forcibly extorting and controlling everyone else. This is why government, by its very nature, is fundamentally incompatible with peaceful coexistence, is never moral or legitimate, and never leads to peace or justice.
To improve the world, people need to let go of the statist mythology they were taught, and embrace instead some very basic principles: VOLUNTARYISM is the belief that all human interaction should be voluntary, free from fraud, coercion or violence; THE NON-AGGRESSION PRINCIPLE states that it is wrong to initiate violence against another, and that physical force is justified only when used to defend against aggression; SELF-OWNERSHIP means that every individual owns himself, and therefore owns the results of his time and effort.
These ideas are so simple and obvious that the average person, when he hears them described, imagines that he already agrees with them. However, most people--at least at first--fail to realize that such concepts completely rule out the possibility of government of any kind. Only a STATELESS SOCIETY is at all logically or morally compatible with non-aggression, self- ownership, and voluntaryism, because government, by its very nature, is always coercive and violent, and--to one degree or another, in one way or another--always infringes upon the self- ownership of the individual. (Those who say they want a "government" which only protects individual rights fail to realize that any purely defensive organization would not be "government," since it would have no power to tax or legislate, would have no monopoly, and would have no special power or authority.)
People are so accustomed to hearing "master plans" from politicians that they often have a hard time imagining actual freedom--a society that doesn't try to create a one-size-fits-all agenda for everyone, where instead, people can organize and cooperate in a million different ways. In other words, ANARCHY. To achieve such a society does not require any election, revolution, or political movement. It simply requires the people understanding and embracing the ideas of self-ownership and non-aggression, and letting go of the insane idea that civilization requires each individual to abandon his own free will and conscience in favor of blind obedience to a centralized ruling authority. When that lie dies, perpetual war and oppression will die with it.
As more and more people awaken to this truth, the power of the beast known as "government" diminishes, and the power of humanity grows. In a very real sense, the world really is on the brink of "anarchy": a society of free, equal, peaceful human beings. The age of statism and authoritarianism--and all the pain, injustice, suffering and death it has brought with it--is nearing its end. The age of peaceful coexistence, and a truly free and voluntary society, is about to begin. Whether you will be one of those helping to make this change happen, or one of those resisting it, is up to you.

The problem with anarchy is that it leads to future tyranny by warlords.
What are we living under now if this isn’t tyranny?
Thugs have guns too.
To prey on others they join together in gangs.
In self-defense, the rest of us also must band together. Which leads directly to the emergence of leaders, rules (laws), etc.
It should be noted that criminal gangs in such circumstances have an inherent advantage over the rest of us. They choose when and where to attack. By the time decent people get themselves together to fight back, the gang has moved on or dispersed.
Since food has to be grown, the decent people of the world cannot stay together permanently to defend each other, they have to disperse to deal with the tasks of survival. Historically the way this was handled was by the people designating one man as King (Duke, Count, etc.), who kept enough thugs around him in his Brute Squad to squash any competing gangs. (To be accurate, the King more often designated himself.)
This of course left the people totally vulnerable to oppression by the King and his Brute Squad, but oppression by one is preferable to free-lance oppression by many, and at least the King had a vested interest in keeping his people alive and productive.
AFAIK, the only truly pacifist and (more or less) anarchic society on record is that of the Moriori. It’s interesting to look up what happened when they encountered a non-pacifist society. In this case, it was’t whitey, it was their warlike cousins the Maori.
The Maori enslaved, raped, murdered and cannibalised the Moriori.

Correctamundo! Only the shell of our republic remains. Its guts are rotted. One of my faults is I normally check out the morning C-Span show. If the rats that infest that show are typical of their brethren, it means a large minority think the purpose of congress is to do as Obama orders them.
Family will always hinder the extent your coterie can explore to find these people - raiders who are dedicated and have no fixed assets to keep them tied to a place. And then there will be others who will use that opportunity to attack the family left behind.
This is why societies form governments, even autocratic ones. Raising families requires a level of stability anarchy is insufficient in providing.
Very well said. Hostages to fortune and all that.
True.
With today’s weapons where hunting shots from 600 yards are not uncommon, thugs would have to walk very lightly because bounty hunters definitely would be amongst the thousand yard plus shooters. Which brings to mind, “Don’t bother to run. You’ll just die tired.”

Pacifists need to form relationships with those who will fight. I am sure some arrangement could be formed. “Only the strong will survive” is not just a saying. It is the truth.
Uh huh.
More like frogs in a pot. Do it gradually and Americans will accept all forms of tyranny as law - Patriot Act, NSA, de-facto militarised police forces, some of the highest cops-to-citizen ratios on the planet, insane drug laws, TSA, a societal tracking and mapping system that connects everyone with nearly everything they do, via a personalised government-issued number - the SSN., what have you.
The grandest one yet is the illusion that America is not a one-party state.
The frontiers women and children who were left at home when the men went out trapping and hunting were all well trained and adept at protecting the homestead with rifles from wandering Indians and ne’er do wells who came begging for food. I foresee such things happening again should government collapse.
If you like fantasies about American libertarian anarchist everybody-armed societies, you might look at the novels of L. Neil Smith. Not a terribly good writer, but entertaining in a wish-fulfillment way in small doses.
The wandering Indians have nothing against professional raiders with every kind of weapon at their disposal.
I believe the traditional relationship between fighters and non-fighters is some variant of serfdom/slavery.
When I think of the hysteria the two men from Washington caused when they went sniping, I am not the least concerned about police authority. Sure we may have more now than ever before but they are also the most inept bunch I have ever seen. This is obvious because we see them brutalize the person they are arresting more often than not.
I had a man train me when I was in the service how to bring a man to his knees with just a simple quick move. Why are the police not trained in these moves? Most of them are over muscled or too fat to move quickly. The rest are shy of the required brain power.
They went from nightsticks to Tasers when they lowered the IQ standards for LEOs.
Not true:
Yes, there has. And yes, there is. See my post #75.
You don’t seem to have any faith that people can learn new skills to meet the changing demands. Why not?
Thank you. I will go through them tonight.
Raising a family ties people down. If it’s a contest between a set of people whose primary occupation is raising families and another set of people with killing and looting as their mode of existence with either group having access to the latest weapons (the latter, in fact, able to afford more for weapons because these are their primary tools) the latter will always win. There’s a limit to how much resources a person can dedicate, if he or she also has family to take care of. Increasing these resources requires large scale pooling, which inevitably leads to government. The farmer’s taxes go into funding the army that’ll protect his property from enemies afar.
While I agree with what you say, I am curious what the results would be if the original band of thugs, some were quickly killed with the remainder given quick vigilante trials and hung for all to see. I think that would temper the desire to become a roving thug for a good 20 years or so.
