The (light) snow started about 11:00 AM, schools were shutdown at 1:00, but nobody down can drive in anything white. People are taking 3-4 hours to get from downtown to even the expressway around Atlanta I-285.
One baby was delivered on the side of Loop 285 - parents couldn't get to the hospital.
Atlanta's Hartsfield Airport had a "ground stop" from about 15:00 (3:00 pm) to 17:30. It's now just lifted, but the planes aren't taking off yet. That will plug all arriving flights for many more hours.
True there. I'm a Pennsylvania native and have been driving in snow for nearly 50 years. I have great vehicle with 4WD and good tires, but I know damn well that none of that experience or equipment means a damn thing on ice, which these storms usually turn into down in Dixie.
To me, driving in snow is easy, but I am smart enough to stay the hell of the ice.
Be safe and warm, and don't venture on the highways unless absolutely necessary. This Yankee would not go out either on that ice.
And the Global Warming hit the GULF COAST with SNOW, too.
North FL - Don’t know how the citrus groves made out. Are making out overnight ... Now about 20-22 in Atlanta.
It’s not the snow, it’s the ice. All the snide comments overlook the fact that we’re suffering a serious ice storm: temperatures went a hair under freezing, snow fell & landed on warm roads, melted, then cooled & froze making the whole state’s roadways a sheet of ice.
I’m from NY. We had ice storms like this there too, with pretty much the same results save for the experience to know when to go home in time.
Hey!
Thanks for the confirmation!
High today will be 30, 9 degrees tonight, 34 high on Thursday, so we will be sitting tight until at least Friday.
Exactly right! Two days before the snow started we were 63 degrees. The next day saw a high in the mid 40’s and raining and the temps started dropping by noon. By dark it was snowing. This morning we have only an 1-1/2 inches of snow but the road is frozen solid underneath.
It doesn’t make since for us to spend money on snow tires, chains, etc. if we don’t get more than that. Some years we don’t get any.
Years ago, our new plant manager came from New York. He would get SO mad when people didn’t show up for work when it snowed and he refused to shut down the plant. Well, Mr. Smartypants decided that he would come to work, so he tried. He ended up in a ditch. LOL I’m retired now but now the city shuts them down when it’s bad enough to be dangerous.
Al Gore is an idiot! Tennesseans knew that! :-) Stay safe!
That is ice on her window. I live in wonderful cold, snowy Utah, but I know darned well that ice is a problem even for us snow bunnies.
