Middle-aged men who drink the equivalent of two and a half pints a day risk speeding up memory loss and mental decline by six years, researchers have warned.
A 10-year study of more than 7,000 male and female civil servants found men who regularly drank significant amounts of alcohol suffered notable mental decline. The study was reported in the journal Neurology.
In contrast men who drank less than one and a half pints a day, or a glass and a half of wine suffered no impact on mental ability.
The heaviest drinkers were found to have the equivalent memory of someone in their early seventies even though they were still in their mid-sixties, researchers found.
The study proved that some of the memory loss experienced in old age may have been caused by unhealthy drinking habits in middle age.

In Heaven there is no beer, that’s why we drink it here.
I remember using the floor board of the passenger seat as a cooler for my beer.
I was going to comment, but I forgot what this thread was about.
Did their mental state decline because of alcohol consumption or did their alcohol consumption increase because of a mental decline? That is the first question. The second is; how valid is the mental pool representation of people in general using British Civil Servants as a test pool. Based on my experience with a similar group in the US, it would seem not. Here many of those offices resemble the Star Wars bar scene.
People for centuries have enjoyed pints per day, docs use to recommend two glass of wine at diner and before after cocktails.
These studies normally are as reliable as...oh wait what
Maybe alcohol wasn't the main cause of the brain damage.
beer
Another good one. “In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is strength, in water there is bacteria.”
FRiends...
I had something really important to tell you.
But I forgot what it is...
I think we knew that years ago...but I don’t remember exactly when.
Well..
If the stuff I want to forget was caused by the same beer that helps me forget...
There’s some kind of logic loop closure there.
At what age does middle-age begin?
This is why I drink Scotch.
Aa notable Hobbit once asked, “It comes in pints?”
Not in my vision of Heaven. I think of Heaven as a warm sandy beach...and across the road behind the beach is the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. You can't miss it; it's right between IU's Assembly Hall and Wrigley Field. Of course there's beer in Heaven.
How can you test someone’s memory when they’ve had over 2 1/2 pints of beer? lol
A beer a day is good for you...and I'm set until sometime in...20 or 21 something...when was that? Nevermind; it's a long way off.
One of the best sitcom bits of all time!
Hey I resemble that remark.
