I was thinking the same thing. It sure doesn't seem like instinctive behavior.
Beagles are programmed to become obese. Ours never turned down anything and provided himself with as many bunnies as he could catch. He was not too proud to go through garbage, either. We never had another dog so fixated on food.
Don’t think he was this smart, though.
