haha
Kaspersky used here, and have never, ever had malware problems. And I do not surf only cookbook websites. :-)
Rebooting the computer in Safe mode involves turning it on and waiting for the correct moment and hitting the F8 key. The correct moment is when you see that in the upper right-hand corner of the screen in text. If you see a graphics screen, you waited too long.
That will allow most downloaded antivirus/malware packages to run without interference from such things as drivers that may be corrupt and from actual network-based hijacking. Run them there and see what happens.
In truth, the best way to get rid of this stuff is to reformat the hard drive and re-install the operating system. That will require OS media, usually a DVD, and a license key that may be on a sticker on the box itself or with the install media.
Do not do this if you haven't gotten important data off first because it wipes it. If you have irreplaceable data there, take the machine to a professional, who can extract it from your hard drive without booting from it. The machine he'll use to do that from a virus/malware suspect isn't super-hardened, it's reimaged (new OS) immediately thereafter. That's what you'll be doing to your box too.
Let me know if this helps.
Carlo, unless it is a rootkit infection, which it doesn’t seem to be, the extreme remedies such as reloading the OS, wiping the hard disk clean, or involving an expensive professional, should not be required. I’ve been there. The freeware anti-virus and anti-malware programs oughta clean the machine up, even if you have to run it in safe mode, but it’s important to run the scans more than once and, as I mentioned, by more than one such program. Do not panic. Cheers!
There is no excuse for being an ass either.

As “EPU” said...the quickest/surest way is to rewind your PC to a “pre-grandkids visit” restore point. See: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/restore-system-files-and-settings
If nothing else has worked, I have had good luck with this:

How do I say thank you, so ya know I mean it.. I have successfully downloaded the necessary tools to clear my laptop of the Kidiruses..
These days are still confusing since the stroke, but coming along fine.. THANK YOU ALL, and Happy New Year... Carlo

Given the above, I would (gently) suggest that you're as likely to make things worse by tinkering with things with which you're completely unfamiliar.
Spend a few bucks, save yourself a ton of grief, and outsource the cleanup.
In the meantime, a bit of research into some of the basics others have mentioned wouldn't go amiss.

I guess he had to get back to cooking
If it makes you feel any better, my ‘puter got bit last night too (New Years Eve virus?). I’ve done some of things mentioned here. I’m having to start up in boot mode. Not a big deal but I’m ticked knowing something lives in my ‘puter and I don’t know where/what it is. I’ve used AVG and Avast (on the advice of someone here). I’ll keep plugging away until I either get it or give up and take it in.
I just finished scanning with this download.. Spybot;
http://www.safer-networking.org/
and this antivirus.. AVG;
THEY WORKED.. WOO HOO.. :)
see post #78 Good luck.. Happy New Year
most of the major anti virus venders have a download that you use to build a bootable usb stick or dvd. some nastywares can’t be seem using normal antivirus packages because of where they load. These off line scanners prevent rootkits from hiding and thus can erase them. Microsoft has a free one.
