Ignored by jail staff, woman loses arm after rough arrest

A woman has filed suit against the police department that injured her arm during her arrest and then ignored her increasingly poor medical state — eventually costing her an arm.

Needham claimed that police surprised her while she was in the bathroom, tasered her and applied arms bars and wrist locks...

Needham spent one week in Allegheny County Jail, during which she asked to see a doctor 16 times. Belatedly, she was taken to a hospital, where doctors amputated her arm at the elbow.

Needham had a minor criminal record. Earlier this year, she plead guilty to resisting arrest, simple assault and disorderly conduct.

The lawsuit alleges cruel and unusual punishment, excessive force, battery and negligence. Needham is seeking $75,000 in damages.

all well and good but if bothered to read the treatment (even IF her being handcuffed caused said injury which has NOT been proven) AMPUTATION is NOT the corrective surgery.

I would like to offer these deputies an employment opportunity.

My local library is forming a SWAT to retrieve overdue books. They will be transported in a old Soviet APC, and be armed with Schmeisser Machinenpistolen, and they will have semi-starved Alsations on chain leashes. Uniform? Black Kevlar everything including helmets, jack boots with hobnails. Trick laser sights, stun grenades, RPGs ... in short everything needed to bring the holders of overdue public library materials to immediate justice.

If perchance, they laser, taser, RPG, or stun grenade the wrong house: TS. It will serve as an example to the rest of the community to shape TF UP ... and get those books back on time!

"Speaking of state run liquor stores, are there still drive in liquor stores around these days?"

I saw a drive thru liquor store in Wortham, Texas last Saturday. Not state run, though.

Are you qualified as a surgeon or just a botlicker?

I find it incredible anyone can defend inhumane treatment of any citizen by our authorities.

Once this woman was arrested and thrown in jail the facility has an obligation to provide for the well being of the inmate. The ignored her medical condition and they should pay dearly for this woman losing her arm. IF she went in with the medical condition pre-existing the jail still has an obligation to get the medical treatment she required. IF the injuries sustained during her arrest caused the loss of her arm they failed to provide the medical care and must be made to pay for this.

Jail is ideally a punishment to “correct” a person’s anti-social behavior. It is not somewhere to just send people for needless suffering. If someone requires daily life saving medication should that person be condemned to death for a two week DUI sentence?

Now, finally a man after my own heart. What about chronic parking meter violators? Shot on site to stop them from reproducing or the usual beat down accompanied by a few kicks in the ribs as reminders? Decisions, decisions, decisions, it’s a tough life but somebody has got to do it.

you are quick to jump to the conclusion that police treated this woman ‘inhumanely’. And what the heck is a botlicker????

Whether I am qualified as a surgeon is less important than am I qualified as a diagnostician and the answer is yes I am and I am very good at it.

Are you an internist or perhaps a family practitioner?

(I'm assuming from your post that you're an MD)

Stop tryin' to butter me up. If you have any overdue books, CD's, etc. I shall put aside any personal feelings to bring my Public Library SWAT down on you (and your pets) like a ton'o'bricks.

Your idea of parking meter SWAT teams would place these selfless public servants at risk. You see, these dastardly violent criminals are already targeted by drones loaded with laser-guided cluster bombs. Approved by the Obama administrationm this is done by ZIP control in areas with high Republican registration.

Refusal of medical treatment constitutes inhumane treatment.

Botlicker =bootlicker,as in one who automatically ,like a robot, defends authority figures despite evidence of sadistic behavior.

Sadistic behavior includes applying restraints in a manner known to cause pain rather than just prevention of escape or blocking ability to cause harm.

Compensated “somewhat for the loss of a limb”???!!

What is one of YOUR arms worth ?

Not everyone arrested is guilty, not everyone guilty even goes to prison, and despite the reality and the evident sadistic glee of some sickos who post here, prison rape ,prison murders, and beating are not supposed to be official punishments.Nor are loss of life or limb in local jails to be ignored.

Personally I suspect very few ,if any, jail inmates actually hang themselves.Who is going to notice which bruises are from the rough handling of an uncooperative prisoner versus those of a prisoner fighting the strangling sheet being applied by another inmate or a crooked officer. It is a too convenient way to dispose of people who might cause trouble for someone “important”

Perhaps the officer didn’t have time to attend to her needs because he was too busy driving back to her house to shoot her dog?

and what difference would it make as to what my specialty is?

You are claiming a certain level of specialized knowledge, so it's fair to ask what you mean when you say you're a 'diagnostician'.

Are you an MD? If not, what is your profession?

According to this reference, infection and amputation can result from acute compartment syndrome.

_______________________________________________________________

Infection is a serious complication of compartment syndrome. In a retrospective review by Matsen et al, 11 of 24 extremities that had late surgical decompression developed infections, and 5 of these infections led to an amputation.

Do you disagree with the above?

Why is it, that as a country, Americans want to pick and choose the constitutional rights they as individuals like, and then those they don't like; they agree to their violation? Conservatives want 2nd amendment gun rights, but most are OK with 4th amendment violations of every suspected criminal. Liberals want 4th amendment rights, but want gun owners to be treated like suspected criminals.
What am I missing here, as a freedom loving constitutionalist?
