Where did you find that it was only a piece of skin that was cut off? This article is claiming the tip was severed.
Unless she was deformed before the accident, her fingernail was at the end of her finger, not the base.

Like much of what is passed off as journalism today, the description of what was “severed” was as clear as mud.
I did not take the writing “...fingertip, which was severed below the fingernail...” to mean the entire tip (bone, skin & fingernail) of the finger was excised at a point located “behind” where the fingernail began but in “front” of the first joint in that finger. Instead I took it to mean that some skin BELOW (set your fingers flat on your keyboard and ponder the portion of the fingers that are below your fingernails—that portion is mostly just essentially skin). So I think when the amazing little girl managed to close the door on her finger some of her skin was sheared off. This was not an unusual accident for kids (but usually boys) to have.
