Report: Mike Shanahan leaning toward starting Kirk Cousins

UPDATE (9:15 a.m. ET): Well that didn't take long. A report from John Keim of ESPN has Cousins already named the starter, though it's not official (and the Redskins probably won't announce it). Mark Maske of the Washington Post reports the "tentative" plan is to start Cousins.

The drama is set to unfold fast and furious in Washington as the Redskins season comes to a close. And the opening act (of the second set?) is underway: reports emerged Wednesday morning that Mike Shanahan is leaning toward starting Kirk Cousins.

Jay Glazer of Fox Sports reports that "people inside [the Redskins] building" are "under the impression" Cousins will start.

Additionally, a source specifically tells Glazer -- re: Cousins starting -- that it "looks that way but won't be sure he settles on it [until] practice." That sourced added that "Mike can always change."

That change would/could come in the form of an argument from current/deposed starter Robert Griffin III.

After reports emerged that Shanahan wanted to resign last year, Shanahan promptly didn't completely deny those reports on Sunday before noting on Monday that he was contemplating shutting Griffin down for the year. You don't do that to your starting, star quarterback -- assuming he's healthy like Shanahan said -- unless you're trying to Costanza your way out of your job.

With the Redskins reportedly thinking about withholding cash from Shanny, that could be the exact plan. So, everyone's operating under the assumption that Cousins is the starter for the last three weeks of the season. But RG3 will have a chance to try and persuade Shanahan that he should start, either verbally or in practice.

That means three more days of heightened tension and drama in Washington as a 3-10 team with the second-worst point differential in the NFL (-128) gets ready to play the Falcons in Atlanta.

It's only going to get messier from here.

Just like the Saints. When they were losers, no Saints stickers on any cars around here. Now they are everywhere. I am a Cowboy fan, win or lose, mostly lose.................

Paging Joe Gibbs! Paging Joe Gibbs! Can you please p/u the red courtesy phone!

Snyder's already tried that approach. Didn't work. What he should do is hire a younger university winning coach.......oops! tried that, too.......or maybe hire a high profile NFL vet...........oh, okay, that didn't work, either.......maybe he should just try hiring a big name quarterback.................oh, wait..............

And because even too many conservatives believe the nonsense the sports media says about the best players playing in the NFL, Tebow is still unemployed and RGScreen is running 3yd option plays.

Play out the string, ahem~loose, shoot for top draft pick at No. 1.

They have no first round pick next year.

Ah, ur right:

” The Redskins will be without a first-round pick as a result of the trade for the rights to pick Robert Griffin III in 2012, but they have at least one pick in the rest of the rounds, which should help bring in some much-needed talent.”

I`d still rest Griffin. He`s taken a beating and came back too soon.

Yeah, I look at everyone loving on the Chiefs, and I think “Where were you all last year?”

The Vikings would be glad to take either one of them.

I wonder if they be willing to take Cutler from the Bears.

Can’t say that I blame him. RG3 has played just awfully this year. Cousins might inspire the whole team to do better. Couldn’t be much worse, so not much of a downside.

“The Skins have ruined at least two franchise QBs by never having any semblance of an offensive line in front of them and, apparently, Shanahan doesn’t want to see that happen to RB3.”

A “mobile QB” (ie. a running QB) is a double-edged sword. Even with a good offensive line these guys tend to hold the ball longer. Add the fact that as an O-lineman you never really know where the guy is behind you, so you set the pocket and hope. Sometimes holding the ball gets you a big play, more often you get a sack or an INT. And in the long-run you almost always end with an injured QB.

I’ve been watching a bunch of “Mobile QB’s” in Philly since Randall Cunningham. They almost always were the most sacked QB’s in the league. Give me a QB that has just enough mobility to slide around in the pocket, gets a good pre-snap read, and has a quick-release. Took an injury to our latest “Mobile QB” for us to find one of those.

That is true, my son has been a Ravens fan for years, and he was so ticked at the fairweather fans. As a true child of the 70’s whose main goal at age 4 was to be a Dallas Cowgirl, I am familiar with fairweather fans. Happened with the Rams in 1999, and when the cowboys get another Aikman and Enmit, primetime and the playmaker, everyone will be a fan again.
