dictionaries ad nauseam | 5 December 2013 | Thursday's sub

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

slumgullion \sluhm-GUHL-yuhn, SLUHM-guhl-\, noun
1. a stew of meat, vegetables, potatoes, etc.
2. a beverage made weak or thin, as watery tea, coffee, or the like.
3. the refuse from processing whale carcasses.
4. a reddish, muddy deposit in mining sluices.

Example sentences:
"...d'yever eat good old fashioned slumgullion boy, 'taint nothin but scrambled eggs and potatoes all scrambled up together."
-- Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums, 1958

We could not eat the bread or the meat, nor drink the "slumgullion."
-- Mark Twain, Roughing It, 1872

Etymology:
Slumgullion is an Americanism dating back to the 1840s. It is perhaps related to the word cullion, which comes from the Latin term meaning "bag" or "testicle."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

xshub is a xenophobe, the sticking point with that trip is i want him to come too. he sojourned to Germany for a conference several yrs ago and stopped in England on the way home to spend the weekend with xsteen who was there with a friend for the weekend, while she was on her Rome semester. He had a bad experience with a cab driver who didn’t speak english and so has soured on foreign travel altogether. i am obsessed with the Tudors and xsbaby would love to see things Harry Potter.

I have been to Hawaii multiple times, we honeymooned in Maui and have been back there and to Kauai several times, a few years back we went to the big island and stopped in Oahu and visited Pearl Harbor. I love Hawaii, and would love to go. I have never been to england.

OK, no problem. It’s settled.

We’ll let his company pay for everything, leave him at home teleconferencing, then you and I will spend 3-4 weeks touring England.

Along came the cult of Obama,
with him he brought his baby’s mama.
Their fans drank the kool-aid
a slumgullion of government aid.
How about we dump his endless drama?

It was. I don’t know where they got “short ribs” in the description. There were no bones in this stew — just lots of beef, potatoes, turnips, carrots, and peas.

The best part is that the crust was stretched over the top of this generous-sized baking crock with no crust on the bottom, or down the sides. So none of the crust was soggy, and you could tear off pieces and dip it in the juice.

Mmmmmmm-good. Perfect for a winter evening when the snow is falling outside.

sounds yummy. i do not like stew, but i do like pot pie, so maybe the crust would make this something i would eat.

Is Roger Simon nuts? His statement that he would vote for a “foreign born for President if he were the better candidate” just blows my mind. The rest of his column is thought provoking, if not a little naive, but that one statement shows him to be an unrepentant leftist!

Happy Hour sucks.

Back in the day, the barmaid/tender would comp every third drink.

Now with Micros. The connection between supply, and cash in makes that untenable.

They call it Point of Sale. I prefer a different use of POS.

And I don’t even frequent those kind of establishments any more, but there was a sense of...Hospitality...

Act like the Wedding is 2 weeks earlier, until then.

Then you can enjoy yourself.

You’ve earned it.

Thomas Sowell has written so much on this,it’s disgusting that no one raises his issue re: a bar to entry into the workforce.
