In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

slumgullion \sluhm-GUHL-yuhn, SLUHM-guhl-\, noun
1. a stew of meat, vegetables, potatoes, etc.
2. a beverage made weak or thin, as watery tea, coffee, or the like.
3. the refuse from processing whale carcasses.
4. a reddish, muddy deposit in mining sluices.

Example sentences:
"...d'yever eat good old fashioned slumgullion boy, 'taint nothin but scrambled eggs and potatoes all scrambled up together."
-- Jack Kerouac, The Dharma Bums, 1958

We could not eat the bread or the meat, nor drink the "slumgullion."
-- Mark Twain, Roughing It, 1872

Etymology:
Slumgullion is an Americanism dating back to the 1840s. It is perhaps related to the word cullion, which comes from the Latin term meaning "bag" or "testicle."

The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)

Let’s raise the minimum wage to $50/hr and be done with it. No one will hire. A+ for you.

they were talking about it on the radio this AM, saying that pilot whales are very social, and that the waters there are shallow. One gets stuck, and then the others don’t want to leave him in distress.

Bucks County is a step up from the dregs ; ) Xsteen at the Flyers game was roaring, saying it was SOOOO philly. #1, the game was early like noonish, and on their way in, they see a couple SLAMMING down beers before entering. and then the accents were ridic, she said i hear “ya gotta get OWEpen there!” Well, i will give them credit, she had on a Caps hat and while no Caps jersey, she had a white blouse, royal blue velvet blazer and red scarf, so the colors were unmistakeable, and no one said boo or raised an eyebrow at her. Her fave thing to say is how ROUGH the philly women look, LOL!

It sounds like she looked all American. I hope she was rooting for Kimmo Timo and Hartsy. I know how she loves a ginger.

Yeah, ripped out everything to the studs, all new electrical, plumbing and heating. We were doing wiring until midnight last night.

I’ve always done these projects all myself, but I have a laid off neighbor kid doing grunt work and my daughters boyfriend is an electrician, both basically work for grinders and beer, so it’s been a huge help.

I’ll be a hell of a lot longer than 3 weeks! I hope to have the walls up floor in before Christmas.

As I’ve been scanning the Cyber Monday all week deals at Amazon, I’ve thought of you because they have lots of fishing stuff. You should check it out.

we have no ability to do anything ourselves, but our contractor is a guy we have known and worked with for well over 20 years and he timed everything perfectly to minimize the inconvenience, which i really appreciated. your’s is also much more comprehensive, we just switched out cabinets, put in granite countertops and new appliances, and a tile backsplash. the hardwood floor is looking kind of beat after all of that, so we may have to look into refinishing that.

I may have to do that. I’ve gotten into making most of my own gear, as I really hate the jerks at the tackle shop down the street and I can rarely find the heavy duty gear I prefer when shopping online.

I pour all my own lead sinkers and make the jigs, as the prices in the store are nuts. I trade finished stuff for scrap lead, and having friends who are plumbers, roofers and demolition guys gets me a pretty good supply. I got over a half a ton of x-ray room shielding lead last spring. That made quite a few sinkers.

I’ll go take a look on Amazon, thanks for thinking of me! :)

Having a competent contractor you can trust is huge. There are so many horror stories. One of my fishing friends is a cabinet maker, he was telling horror stories of the last guy he worked for before going on his own how the guy charged a couple close to a million buck for a job that should have cost no more than a quarter mil, and the people STILL loved the contractor. Some real dirtbags out there. Some pretty stupid homeowners, too, though.

If you decide to have the floors refinished, take that week and go away on vacation!

I have fantastic news to share about my vet visit yesterday. I brought big dog in with the little guy, who needed shots and a heartworm check. I was planning to just have the big guy weighed to see if we could start his treatment for his heartworms. I knew he had lost at least another pound. Well, he lost 3 since August so I was happy about that because it put him in the range we needed to save $375 on his treatment. He really hasn’t had any symptoms of heartworm infestation, although he tested positive for the antigen in January. Microfilaria has always been negative. The other was trace positive so I asked the vet yesterday if we could recheck him before initiating treatment. I just had doubts. Guess who was negative??? I was THRILLED! It saves him a very serious treatment with arsenic, which has terrible side effects and risks and saves me about two grand. Mostly I’m happy that I can take him walking to the park with me. Yay! Celebration time here!
