Mike Tomlin, Steelers could face ‘stiff financial penalties’ and possible loss of draft pick

the NFL has performed 'an aggressive review' of the play in question, where Tomiln appeared to intentionally get in the path of Baltimore kick returner Jacoby Jones on a could-be touchdown, forcing Jones to alter his route and run towards a Pittsburgh defender.

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin was caught by television cameras Thursday night with a big smile on his face after his positioning on a third-quarter kick return from Ravens receiver Jacoby Jones — in which Tomlin had part of his right foot on the field as he watched the return on the video board with his back to the play — forced Jones to cut inside, allowing cornerback Cortez Allen to catch up and make the tackle, preventing a touchdown. The Ravens scored a field goal on the possession and won 22-20.

Tomlin’s timing couldn’t have been worse for him because according to FOX Sports, the NFL sent video the day before Thanksgiving to all 32 teams warning them about sideline interference.

"No way you could hit someone standing still, significantly hit them, and not slow down."

A good stiff arm to the back of the coach's head wouldn't have slowed the runner down too much. Anyway, if he hadn't changed direction, the coach might have moved a little more quickly.

Ben is playing well. He is being handcuffed by Todd Haley.

The team has gotten old. But that’s on the GM Colbert for not maximizing draft picks. Biggest problem they’re really facing now is they keep having to draft new receivers because none of them are worth a second contract, which has allowed the defense to age. Of course Colbert architected 3 SB runs so I don’t think they’ll oust him yet, but there’s a lot more work that needs to be done than there’s draft picks to do it. Of course part of it is the natural cycle of the NFL, Ben was the teams last top 10 pick, success means bad picks. Unless you’ve got Belichick in the office pulling his one this year for 2 next year trades.

Darrell Green could have easily caught Jones. Still might.

As if I needed another reason to dislike the Steelers.

Same here, but they misspelled the team name. It should be "Stealers". And if Rush is watching this thread, "No, I dislike the Stealers as much as most Texans".

Put that one down to “headlines I know I’m gonna regret clicking on but I can’t help myself.”

He was fast. I still remember him chasing down Tony Dorsett.

Under the “palpably unfair” rule, the officials could have awarded the Ravens and Jones any penalty they thought appropriate, including a touchdown. Further, the rules stipulate that anyone who leaves the bench to interfere with play, including a coach, trainer or player is automatically disqualified, and is subject to further sanctions by the commissioner.

Clearly, Tomlin should as a minimum been disqualified, and Jones awarded serious yardage. Even stepping on the *white* area during play is a 15 yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

I remember a game between the Redskins and Cowboys, where Tony Dorsett broke into the open on a run and thought he was headed for the end zone. But Darrell Green caught him from behind.

Dorsett had a surprised look on his face when he got up off the ground.

I re-watched that again tonight on the youtube. Dorsett slowed down as Green was approaching and reached back to stiff arm instead of continuing to run. He sure wasn't accustomed to anybody hanging with him and panicked it seemed. And I remember that running with the ball in one arm slowed me down more than you might think. When you sprint you use your arms to maximize your forward speed; take away one of two and you slice off some performance.

Now if it sounds like I'm a Dorsett/Cowboys homer/apologist it's because I am, but still, these things have to be borne in mind when thinking about that play. Having said that, Green was scary-fast.

A dream race betwixt he, Bob Hayes, Bo Jackson, Alexander Wright, Hershel Walker, OJ, Joey Galloway, and Deion Sanders would have been a mega event.

As I said, Ben is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. I can think of maybe four or five whom I’d rate better. But three years ago, there was maybe one. He’s aging and the Steelers need to think about getting him some backup . . . in addition to their lack of depth on running backs.
